I wish someone knocked Hodges out tbh. He was hiding behind the refs talking sh*t and Ben Creagh had the chance but decided to run away like a little girl which I must say was one of the funniest things I've seen on a rugby league field. |

As if Thurston would ever get suspended for anything. He's a protected species and a media darling. |

Thurston escape rated as 'very odd' Written by Dean Ritchie Daily Telegraph Friday, 17 July 2009 07:09 NSW winger David Williams will today have scans to determine whether his cheekbone was fractured by the wild boot of Queensland halfback Johnathan Thurston in Wednesday night's Origin match in Brisbane. As Williams scored a try, Thurston attempted to boot the ball loose, but caught Williams flush. Thurston was charged with grade one dangerous contact with the head/neck, but he avoided suspension with an early plea and is free to play for North Queensland against Wests Tigers at Leichhardt Oval on Sunday. "Very odd," said NSW prop Josh Perry when asked how Thurston walked free. The Daily Telegraph understands Manly will lodge a formal complaint to the NSWRL over the lack of action against Thurston should Williams have a fractured cheekbone. The NSW camp is angry that Penrith second-rower Trent Waterhouse was sent off for being third man in during a fight but Thurston was merely placed on report. "I have no problem with the decision on Thurston, but I thought Trent did less than what Thurston did," Penrith coach Matt Elliott said. ARL CEO Geoff Carr explained the perceived inconsistencies. "There was a view Thurston played at the footy and it was an accident. He didn't mean to make contact with the head," Carr said. "Because there was no intent, Thurston was given a lower grade charge. Waterhouse didn't come in with any malice, but he was still 'third-man-in'." Despite returning to Sydney with a badly bruised left eye, Williams wanted to play down the incident. "It wasn't what you want, but that's footy," Williams said. "You just have to get on with it. I don't hold grudges." Asked was he upset Thurston avoided suspension, Williams said: "No. That's out of my control. It looks worse than what it is. I haven't looked at it (on replay). It isn't broken. I should be sweet to play for Manly (against Cronulla tomorrow night)."[redit][/redit] Edited by arh21980, Jul 16 2009, 04:38 PM.

Bizarre bleating of Maroons Written by Nick Walshaw Daily Telegraph Friday, 17 July 2009 07:15 KNOCKOUT specialist Brett White has a simple message for every whingeing Queenslander north of the border - it's all your fault. White has declared history's most explosive Origin finish was only put in motion because veteran Maroon Steve Price kneed him in the head. The Melbourne prop yesterday suggested The Daily Telegraph "look at the tackle" when quizzed about why he KO'd Price, which instigated the biggest interstate battle since the American Civil War. The claim - which Price denies - comes as White also revealed he was fronted on-field by his own Melbourne teammate Greg Inglis who screamed, "I'm gunna kill you." "What started the fight? I think if you have a look at the video . . . at the tackle . . . I think it's pretty clear," White said as he broke from camp yesterday. "But you know, it was two bookends going at it. That happens in Origin sometimes because there's plenty of passion out there. "Same with the way the game sort of ended, that's Origin too. "And that's why we love it so much. Why it draws a crowd, why it's the pinnacle of rugby league. It's full of passion." Sporting a swollen cheek, five stitches and enough concerns to keep him sidelined for at least a week, Price denied he sparked the fight with his knee. "All I remember is tackling Brett and he was a bit upset by something," he said. "I think me and Smithy were in the tackle so I don't know if (he thought) I did something wrong or Smithy did something wrong. But I didn't deliberately knee him. I can remember that. "He obviously felt something touch his head and everyone gets upset with different things in games. It doesn't always end up being that way but that's the way things are." Meanwhile, it was revealed yesterday the now-infamous "up-and-under for an all-in-brawl" was the brainchild tactic of Queensland's skipper Darren Lockyer. The five-eighth ordered Smith to punt the ball high so their defence could clobber whichever Blue caught the ball. Smith yesterday confirmed the ploy was payback for Steve Price's poleaxing and the pandemonium that ensued. "You don't really see a team get a penalty and then kick the ball straight back to the opposition," Smith said. "We thought the best thing we could do was give one back for our teammates. "Locky came over and asked what I wanted to do. We decided to put it up as high as possible and get down there in some field position and get stuck into them. "If they want to call us sore losers, then we'll call them sore winners. They were easily in front and weren't going to lose when that stink started between Brett White and Steve Price. "It ended up being two-on-one when (Trent) Waterhouse came in. They've got to look at themselves." But in a strange twist, Blues halfback Brett Kimmorley last night revealed his side intended to do exactly the same thing had NSW received the penalty after the White-Price punch-up. "We were going to kick it high and straight to Justin Hodges," Kimmorley said. Blues winger Jarryd Hayne chimed in, saying the Maroons started the violence because they were "embarrassed" at losing in front of 50,000 spectators. "They couldn't win the game so they tried to win the fight. They lost that as well," he said. "The way they carried on was just immature and silly. "The game meant a lot to them. They played in front of a huge home crowd and were embarrassed by the way they played," Hayne added. |

Accusations always flow from a losing side about things that happened during the game. The game is over, leave it to whe proper officials to decide if any incidents should be taken further. |

Maroons 'thugs' make Moore see red BILLY MOORE - the player responsible for the famous "Queenslander" chant - has hit out at the Maroons' tactics in Origin III, suggesting Justin Hodges should have been sent off. He also derided their ploy to send a "gang of thugs" charging towards NSW captain Kurt Gidley as he fielded the "up-and-under for an all-in" from the final-minute penalty. Writing in the Sunshine Coast Daily, Moore said he had never seen a game "unravel" the way the Suncorp Stadium encounter did after Blues prop Brett White knocked out Steve Price two minutes from full-time. Moore said he had no issue with White "except I would like to see if the promoters could put him in the ring with Barry Hall" but he thought referees Tony Archer and Shayne Hayne "panicked", and that Ben Creagh and Sam Thaiday were sin-binned "only for show". However, the former North Sydney and Maroons star said Trent Waterhouse deserved to be sent off - and Hodges should have been. "Trent Waterhouse did deserve to be sent off as the third man in to this incident, theory being this person serves to escalate the problem and unfortunately this theory was proved correct," Moore wrote. "The luckiest man on the field was Justin Hodges. He was fuelling the fire with his tirade of abuse and appealing for a Blues player to step up to him - it was a shame no one south of the border accepted his offer. "I could not believe the last play of the night when the Maroons received a penalty and the complex set play was a 'bomb', which was followed by the gang of thugs looking for the victim who caught the ball. Queensland had completely lost its focus by this stage of the match." Moore compared the electric-charged atmosphere at the ground to the night Wally Lewis was sin-binned after running 20 metres to get involved in a scuffle between Greg Conescu and Phil Daley during the 1988 decider at the same venue. On that occasion, angry Queensland fans hurled beer cans onto the field - a far more dangerous prospect than the plastic cups that littered the ground last week. But at least the Maroons regrouped to come from behind and win that match, whereas Moore claimed their ill-discipline last week resulted in them blowing a golden opportunity to complete a rare series clean sweep. "It was a shame as the Maroon team deserved to inflict the first whitewash on NSW in 14 years. Not to worry, the guys won the series, but it did take the sting out of the celebrations." |
