THE WOW Brisbane Broncos under-20s have left their run too late in a 27-24 defeat at the hands of North Queensland tonight.

A poor first half left the Broncos down 20-6 at halftime and although they piled on three late tries, the task was too much.

The Broncos had a couple of golden opportunities to put themselves back in the match early in the second half, but couldn’t provide the polish.

First captain Guy Ford spilled the ball with a try in the offing, and then Jacob Samoa dropped an easy one with the line beckoning.

Those mistakes were compounded when the Cowboys made a break and Ben Cronin went over untouched to make it 26-6.

Dunamis Lui (pictured) went over for his second try with 13 minutes left and then James Ackerman touched down straight after to make a match of it.

Big prop Dave Hala then crashed over on a wedge move and the Broncos had three minutes to snatch an unlikely victory.

It was just that with Cowboys halfback Ray Thompson using a field goal to run the clock down and confirm a three-point win.

Earlier, Cowboy Obie Geia was having a career night early, posting three tries in the first 23 minutes.

The Broncos opened the scoring through Lui, but then Geia went on his scoring rampage.

When Wayne Ulugia chipped and chased to score his own in the 30th minute, the Cowboys had forged a strong 20-6 lead, one they held until halftime.

NORTH QUEENSLAND COWBOYS NYC 27 (O Geia 3, W Ulugia, B Cronin tries; T Watene 3 goals, R Thompson field goal) defeated BRISBANE BRONCOS NYC 24 (D Lui 2, J Ackerman, D Hala tries; C norman 4 goals) at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
