Rock solid … Rick Stone will try to lead the Knights into the finals despite only taking Newcastle's reins for the past three rounds.

Tomorrow is going to be an emotion-charged day for Newcastle coach Rick Stone. Barely three weeks after taking over in the job, he will try to steer the Knights into the finals via a winner-take-all game against Penrith on Father's Day, less than three months after his dad, Brian, passed away.

Stone will no doubt be bombarded by hugs and kisses from his own family - wife Tanya and sons Ben, 14, Sam, 12 and Jye, two - but it is still bound to be hard for him to get through the day with the effect of the death of his father, Brian, in June, after a period of illness, still raw.

''It's still fresh, and it still hurts,'' Stone told the Herald. ''It still touches pretty deep, because it's only been recent, and I know how much of a supporter Dad was of me, and how proud he was of me. People say, 'If only your old man could have stayed around a few more months.' I would have loved for him to be able to witness my getting the top job. He would have been pretty proud of that.''

Stone, 42, is sitting in his office at the Knights administration block next to EnergyAustralia Stadium, where Newcastle will learn their fate in the match-up with the Panthers. It is the office formerly occupied by Brian Smith, who was sacked as coach after the Knights had gone on a losing streak following the news he was leaving the club at the end of the season to take over at Sydney Roosters.......FULL ARTICLE
