Skipper Elijah Taylor has become the first winner of the Sonny Fai Medal after being named the Junior Warriors' rugby league player of the year.

At 19, Taylor will still be eligible for a third year with the under-20 side next year.

The utility won the award ahead of halfback Shaun Johnson, five-eighth Kurt Kara and centre Siuatonga Likiliki.

Fai, who drowned at a west Auckland beach in January, was the first Junior Warrior to make his National Rugby League debut last year.

Nice one, well deserved, the juniors had a good year this year, far better than the seniors.
