Maguire: We let standards slip

Wigan coach Michael Maguire failed to hide his disappointment after watching his side throw away a 20-point lead against Bradford on Friday night.

The Warriors crashed to their first defeat of the Super League season after the Bulls fought back from 20-0 down to claim a last gasp 22-20 victory at the Gratton Odsal Stadium.

Bradford playmaker Matt Orford masterminded the turnaround with two tries and an assist - making it an unhappy return for his predecessor Paul Deacon in the process.

Speaking after the defeat, a deflated Maguire said: "I'm disappointed. We set a high standard over the last four or five weeks but unfortunately that slipped in the second half.

"It's a matter of the boys understanding that it's an 80-minute game and, if you don't play for 80 minutes, good players like Matt Orford can burn you.

"He showed his skills tonight and he got us. He's a crafty half. He's got a good left foot and a good right-foot step."

Wigan had earlier stormed into a commanding lead thanks to tries from Darrell Goulding, Sam Tomkins, Harrison Hansen and Pat Richards.
Poor decisions

Bradford coach Steve McNamara was shown giving his players a dressing down by the Sky Sports cameras at the interval, and his words paid dividends straight after the break.

Orford turned the tables in astonishing fashion by scoring two tries and setting up another for half-back partner Brett Kearney.

And then it was left to Orford's former Manly Sea Eagles team-mate Glenn Hall to snatch the victory in the dying stages.

"I thought we started well but we lost our way," McNamara admitted.

"We played some dumb rugby league and made some poor decisions. We spent nearly all the first half in our own half and paid the price.

"We needed to smarten up in certain areas and we managed to do that.

"We're not going to get carried away by it. It was a great comeback, as good as any team-bonding exercise, but we can't rely on doing that every week. We know we need to be whole lot better for longer periods.

"Matt wasn't feeling so well in the second half but he came up with some great plays. In tough situations, you need leaders to lead and our leaders responded."
