THERE will be no room for complacency at The Halliwell Jones Stadium when the much-maligned Crusaders outfit arrive for the Super League round five match on Sunday, kick off 3pm.

Written off by many before the season had started, Crusaders have provided a stark reminder that no-one should dismiss the young Welsh club after starting out again with a new-look squad and coaching set-up at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground.

Wolves utility player Simon Grix believes Crusaders were treated badly by the media in the run up to the season.

He said: “I thought it was pretty unfair what people were saying, writing them off before they had even kicked a ball.

“If they play well they are more than capable of beating us and we will not be underestimating them.”

Wolves head of coaching and rugby Tony Smith will certainly not be making that mistake - the same one that has already cost Hull and Salford.

He said: “They will be tough. They have hurt a couple of teams already in the hardest way possible and they will be playing confident rugby.”

So, too, will Wolves, who battled a defensive Huddersfield team away from home at the weekend and returned with two precious points to take them second in the league.

Despite not being a natural half back, Grix deputised well in Briers’ absence and Smith was pleased with how his utility player handled the responsibility.

“I am pleased with the way Grix performed at the weekend,” said the Wolves boss.

“He is a good rugby league player, he reads the game well and he’s a good defender on top of that.

“The way he slotted in was pleasing and he brings a lot of adaptability to the team.”

Smith refused to say whether Grix would be making a second start in the halves against Crusaders but the 24-year-old is almost a certainty to appear due to his flexibilty on the pitch.

Smith revealed that Chris Bridge, who missed Huddersfield with an ankle injury, and Chris Hicks, who came through his first game of the season unscathed, will be available for selection but Briers will not be fit until next week at the earliest.

The ex-England coach remains confident that Wolves will continue their strong start to the season.

He said: “Crusaders will be looking forward to getting another upset and another win - we need to make sure it’s not here against us.

“We’ll give them the respect they deserve but I’m confident.”
