Mates keen to end Johns brothers' feud

FORMER teammates and friends of Matthew and Andrew Johns are keen to broker a peace deal between the feuding brothers.

News of the ongoing spat between two of rugby league's most popular characters came to light over the weekend, with revelations the two are not speaking to each other. The relationship is so strained Matthew did not attend the christening of Andrew's son yesterday.

The situation is so sensitive several people contacted by The Australian would not comment.

It is understood Matthew feels his brother did not show him the same level of support during the sex scandal which saw him sacked by Channel Nine last year as he showed during Andrew's admission to drug use in 2007.

A source close to both confirmed there were issues surrounding Andrew's decision to remain with the network after Matthew's departure and the sense of disloyalty clearly still grates.

"I know for a fact that Joey has tried on a number of occasions to get in touch and sort things out but Matty doesn't want a bar of it," the source said.

"Matty feels he has been let down by a number of people over the past year or so, Andrew included."

Matthew's decision to accept an offer to start a new rugby league show with rival network Channel Seven will put him in competition with several former colleagues and friends on Nine's The Footy Show, of which he was a long-time star.

Matthew Johns' axing from rugby league's free-to-air broadcaster followed the airing of ABC's Four Corners program last year which revealed Matthew's role in a New Zealand sex scandal in 2002 that left a young woman in a suicidal state.

News of the rift being made public was met with sympathy throughout the rugby league community, with several players contacted by The Australian yesterday expressing their hope the Newcastle legends can soon mend their differences.

Former teammate and Knights skipper Paul Harragon said he knew nothing about the falling-out, but said he was keen to get in touch with both to see how he could help.

In Mt Isa, former NSW and Cowboys coach Graham Murray spoke for many when he suggested it was a situation with no winners.

"I feel sad for both of them. You don't like seeing it come down to this," Murray said.

"As footballers they were very good. Andrew was one of the best I've ever seen, arguably the best of his generation. It's terribly disappointing that they are no longer on talking terms.

"You don't like seeing brothers fall out like this, a real pity."
