THE NRL captains believe State of Origin's future is as a stand-alone fixture played on weekends. In an exclusive Daily Telegraph captains poll, 10 of the NRL's skippers voted for Origin games to be switched from Wednesday to Saturday nights. Agreeing to answer a range of questions provided their answers remained anonymous, 15 of the 16 skippers responded to the poll, with only North Queensland's Johnathan Thurston declining to participate. A majority of captains believed midweek Origin games did not give the feature series the prominence it deserved. But ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said his organisation had tried playing Origin on every day of the week, but Wednesdays were the most successful. "We have tried State of Origin on all nights during the week," Carr said. "The last time we tried it on the weekend, there was a hue and cry from the public and media that there was no club footy, no Friday night footy and no Sunday footy. "We finished up playing mid-week and resting the players from club commitments. "We think it is the best fit. "Midweek is also attractive if we go interstate. "If in Melbourne, for example, the game attracts plenty of media mid-week but there might not be that much interest in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia if it was played on the weekend up against AFL." A former NSW Origin captain, Laurie Daley, has also gone against the captain's trend. "I'm happy as it is at the moment," said Daley. "I guess some people would like the game to be played as a stand-alone match on the weekend. "But I remember when we did this before, a lot of people were upset that they didn't get to watch their club footy on the weekends. "I think the fans want to see their teams play every weekend. "I also think you tend to lose a bit of momentum by stopping the competition for three weekends right in the middle of the season." The captains poll covered a number of key areas in rugby league with: * CRONULLA attracting most votes for the club with least chance of reaching the NRL finals this season; * THE Sydney Roosters being the team most agreed would be the competition's big improvers; * GREG Inglis receiving the majority of votes for being the NRL's best player; * INGLIS being the overwhelming favourite as most feared player; * ANTHONY Watmough, Luke O'Donnell and Petero Civoniceva finishing tied as the hardest hitters in the game, and; * PARRAMATTA'S star fullback Jarryd Hayne being voted favourite for the 2010 Dally M Medal. The captains believed Melbourne would once again be the team to beat in 2010. Parramatta were also well supported, but most of the skippers were tipping Craig Bellamy's troops to be back for a fifth successive grand final. Tim Sheens, Brian Smith and Ricky Stuart tied for being the coach under most pressure this season, while Wayne Bennett edged out Bellamy as the NRL's best coach. The captains are adamant the Roosters will be big improvers this season after finishing with the wooden spoon in 2009. With Todd Carney at Bondi, the Roosters' pre-season form has been strong. So do i, it doesn't seem right to me to be playing footy during the week. During the week i work long hours so i can't as relax as much while watching sports as i can during the weekend. I'm not even all that keen on having footy on sundays, friday and saturday nights are what i prefer most. but i suppose that it will be done to suit the majority rather than the minority, but whatever works best is ok by me. |
