Malta has introduced Wheelchair Rugby League to its rugby faithful and the Knights took full advantage to take out the inaugural Wheelchair Rugby League Challenge at St Martin’s College, Swatar recently.

The Malta Rugby League (MRL) joined the Inspire organisation and mens and ladies teams each from Kavallieri Rugby Football Club for the event that included able and non-able bodied athletes – as per the international rules for the rather new sport that was founded in France in 2004.

The Knights progressed to the final after finishing their group matches undefeated and they met Kavallieri Mens in the decider. Inspire beating Kavallieri Ladies for third place.

On a slippery surface following early showers, a brace of tries by Graham Attard gave Kavallieri Mens one hand on the Shield, but Daniel Grima and Anthony Micallef drew the game level before sending the game into extra time.

In golden point extra-time Kristin Baldacchino sent Daniel Grima to score in the corner for the Knights to win the inaugural Wheelchair Rugby League Challenge.

The MRL and Inspire are accepting teams for the next event. For more information, visit www.malteserugbyleague.com
