The Newcastle Knights NYC team has overcome a 20-point deficit late in the first-half to emerge 32-24 winners over the Canterbury Bulldogs in the Toyota Cup at ANZ Stadium on Saturday.

Newcastle struggled to hold on to possession in the opening stanza and paid the price as a new-look Canterbury NYC side - boasting no less than 11 debutants - raced in five quick tries to claim a handy 24-4 lead just before the break.

But a try in the dying moments of the opening half by promising Knights five-eighth Tyrone Roberts gave the visitors some much-needed confidence heading into the sheds and they emerged almost unstoppable, posting a further four unanswered tries to escape with an incredible eight-point comeback win.

Along with Roberts, the Knights were served well by skipper Ethan Cook and elusive full-back Neenan Simpson, who was purchased from the Bulldogs in the off-season.

The match began in remarkable fashion with Bulldogs prop Judah Lavulo inexplicably spilling a simple pass from the kick-off, allowing Knights second-rower Matt Herman to shoot through and scoop up the scraps for the opening try after barely 10 seconds of play.

Knights centre Peter Mata'utia couldn't add the extras, leaving Newcastle 4-0 up.

It didn't take the Bulldogs long to recover from their early mishap when just eight minutes later, centre Pao Pele caught the Knights' left-edge defence napping with a strong blindside dummy-half charge to score in the right corner, leveling the scores at 4-all.

Last year's SG Ball player of the year, Dale Finucane, showed why several at the Bulldogs rate him a genuine star of the future when he steamrolled the Knights defence to score his team's second try in the 15th minute.

The Dogs raced out to a 14-4 lead three minutes later, centre Lazurus Mulu strolling over in the left corner off a deft Nehe Milner-Skudder pass.

An intercept by Mulu kept the Dogs on the front foot and just a couple of plays later they were in for their fourth try when pivot Aiden Sezer stepped his way over beside the posts on the half-four.

When former Dragon, Josh Kent, raced over for the Dogs' fifth try just a few minutes later, the hosts were headed for a big win at 24-4 in front.

But Roberts' try just before the break gave the visitors the hope they would need to turn the tables in the second half.

Roberts crossed for his second try six minutes after the resumption to well and truly put the Knights back in the contest at 16-24 down.

Some brilliant ball movement down the left-edge paved the way for a right-edge try by Mata'uita in the 56th minute to put the Knights within four-points of their opponents.

By now the Bullodgs defence was shot as was demonstrated by Ethan Cook just after the hour when he bustled his way through some tiring blue and white bodies to put Newcastle in front 26-24 following Mata'uita's conversion.

The Knights capped off their victory with a crafty try off a scrum by Simpson in the 69th minute.

Newcastle Knights NYC 32
Tries: Roberts 2, Herman, Mata'utia, Cook, Simpson
Conversions: Mata'utia 4

Canterbury Bulldogs NYC 24

Conversions: Sezer, O'Mally
