Todd Carney and Mitchell Pearce starred as Sydney Roosters upset a heavily favoured South Sydney 36-10 in their opening match of the NRL season at ANZ Stadium.

Pearce grabbed a double and Carney kicked five goals as the Roosters halves ripped the Rabbitohs apart under new coach Brian Smith, recording a six tries-to-two victory.

Pearce and Shaun Kenny-Dowall scored two tries apiece, while Sam Perrett and Aiden Guerra also crossed.

South Sydney coach John Long suffered a miserable start in his first game in charge of the Rabbitohs, with winger Nathan Merritt scoring the home side's only two tries.

However it was Merritt's second-half blunder that would have left his new coach seething, dropping the ball cold as he raced towards the try-line with his side trailing 18-6.

The error was compounded minutes later when Carney split the Roosters line, before Guerra barged over from the ensuing tackle of the set.

While Sam Burgess and Dave Taylor made promising starts for their new club it appears Souths have a lot of work to do if they are to live up to pre-season hype surrounding their premiership chances.
