Makeshift full-back Leroy Cudjoe sealed a 26-20 victory with a penalty as Huddersfield beat Leeds for only the second time in 24 attempts in the Super League era. Winger Cudjoe, deputising for injured skipper Brett Hodgson, kicked the vital goal in a close contest following a high tackle on David Fa'alogo by Luke Burgess four minutes from time. Martin Aspinwall had earlier edged Huddersfield ahead at 24-20 with a converted try on 66 minutes after Leeds had come back from 12-0 down to lead 20-12 at the Galpharm Stadium. The Giants suffered an early blow when centre Michael Lawrence was carried off with an injury after seeming to land badly following a tackle. But the home side were undeterred and romped into a 12-0 lead with two tries in three minutes. Kiwi Fa'alogo broke down the middle on 12 minutes and passed outside to the oncoming Shaun Lunt, who dashed away for his fourth try of the season. The Leeds defence was caught cold soon after when a Cudjoe kick-through evaded their entire back line and Lee Gilmour pounced to score in the left corner. Leeds hit back with a long spell of pressure near the Giants' try line which finally told when Ian Kirke put Rob Burrow through for a touchdown on 30 minutes. Huddersfield's usually tight defence then went to sleep and allowed Leeds to take the lead with two converted solo tries within 60 seconds just before halftime. Danny McGuire raced through down the right flank on 38 minutes and Ryan Hall took advantage of poor defending on the same wing to score a minute later. Burrow added the extras to leave Leeds with an 18-12 half-time lead. Both sides were then reduced to 12 men early in the second half when Andy Raleigh and Ali Lauitiiti were sin binned for their roles in a brawl near the Giants' try line. Referee Richard Silverwood awarded Leeds a penalty for the initial foul by Raleigh and Burrow duly despatched the goal kick. But Huddersfield were quickly back in the contest when Larne Patrick dived over under the posts for a converted try which set the Giants up for a grandstand finish. Aspinwall's converted try and Cudjoe's penalty sealed the win for the Giants. Link |
