Sharks circling on unwanted record

Cronulla are on target to claim an unwanted record, the "gummy" Sharks closing on the longest losing streak in the NRL since the premiership was established in 1998.
The current Sharks outfit extended their losing streak to 11 when they went down to Melbourne Storm on the opening weekend of the 2010 premiership. And the defeat saw them move into sixth place on the list of NRL losing streaks.

The Sharks, as they bid to get off the "runaway train", will look on the 2010 fixture list a little uneasily, as they face the Warriors in Auckland and South Sydney and Parramatta at Toyota Stadium in the coming weeks.

They may, then, be looking to defeat Manly at Brookvale Oval in round five if they are to avoid claiming the record for the longest losing streak on their own.

The 2009-2010 Sharks are also unique in NRL annals as they boast two of 10 longest streaks since 1998, the run of defeats separated only by their four consecutive, and unlikely, victories from round 12 to round 15 inclusive last season.

But they'll be glad to know they're a long way from claiming the longest run of defeats in Australian rugby league history.

University are the "proud" owners of that mark, having lost 42 matches in succession between round two of the 1934 Sydney competition and round 14 of the 1936 premiership
