By Ian Laybourn, Press Association Sport Warrington's in-form centre Matt King is relishing the prospect of coming up against one of his idols tonight as the Wolves aim to break their Knowsley Road hoodoo. The former Melbourne Storm threequarter has hit a rich vein of form in Engage Super League XV with six tries in his last three matches but he is wary of his likely opponent, veteran St Helens centre Matt Gidley, who is set to make his return from a two-match absence with a torn quad. Gidley enjoyed a distinguished career with Newcastle and Australia before successfully filling the boots of Jamie Lyon at Knowsley Road and remains a class act in the twilight of his career. "Gids is a great player," admitted King. "Being a centre, he's a player I've always looked up to. "I'm proud to say I've played against him now on quite a few occasions and he's such a gentleman, too, a great fella. I also played with him one time in City versus Country. "(Warrington winger) Chris Hicks often says he would give anything to have played outside Matt Gidley because so many wingers have made a career that way. "Timana Tahu, when he was a young fella, he lived off the Matt Gidley flip pass." The return of Gidley, along with that of Paul Wellens and Si Soliola, means St Helens are at full strength for the first time this season as they look to draw level with the second-placed Wolves. Warrington can go two points clear at the top of the table, at least for 48 hours, if they manage to break their Super League duck on their last visit to Knowsley Road before St Helens prepare to move to their new stadium in 2011. The Wolves have won only one of 35 Super League derbies and that was at Wilderspool nine years ago, but they arguably have never had a better chance of ending their drought. "We're aware of the record," said King. "We're playing Saints at a time when we're travelling pretty well so in that regard I suppose it's a good time to be playing them. "But Saints are going to be very fired up for this game and come at us with all guns blazing. It's going to be a great game to watch." All eyes in Wrexham tonight will be on Gareth Thomas as he prepares to make his debut for Crusaders against Catalans Dragons. The 35-year-old former Wales and British Lions skipper is expected to start his rugby league career on the wing and possibly move inside to centre as he gets to grips with his switch of codes. Thomas has been forced to undergo a crash course in rugby league after joining the Crusaders only a fortnight ago, but new team-mate Michael Witt, who switched to rugby union with Otago before reverting to the 13-man code, believes he is ready for the challenge. "I think he'll be fine," said Witt. "He is obviously a quality athlete and he's been working really hard while he's been with us." In tonight's other games champions Leeds look to bounce back from their defeat at Huddersfield when they host Hull KR while Hull and Bradford do battle at the KC Stadium. |
