The Pirtek Parramatta Eels have suffered their first loss of the season in Toyota Cup 32-16 in a controversial finish which halted a late comeback from the home side.

The Manly Sea Eagles dominated the Parramatta Eels in the first half to streak to a 16-0 lead by half-time.

The Eels struggled to hold back teenage prodigy William Hopoate from scoring and winger Michael Oldfield also crossed for the Sea Eagles.

Manly’s captain Liam Higgins strolled over just before half-time to give his side a healthy advantage at the break, but the Eels were quick to lessen the gap in the second half.

Parramatta centre Rory Brien stepped the Manly defence and broke free of a tackle to score the Eels’ first points of the match. At 16-6 Parramatta’s game was on the line when Manly were deep in Eels territory, but the home side’s defence withstood the attacking raid.

The Eels couldn’t capitalize on a 40/20 kick from TK Amosa and Manly scored next through prop James Cunningham, who was an unlikely beneficiary of a deft grubber under the posts. The afternoon became even worse for the Eels when the kick-off sailed out on the full and Manly scored an easy try from the next set, blowing the lead out to 28-6.

An excellent kick from Jaydin Tavita found Ken Sio on the wing perfectly, plucking the ball from the Manly defenders’ hands to score the Eels’ second try. Unfortunately Tavita failed to find the mark with his conversion and Parramatta still trailed 28-10.

Sio scored his second try with nine minutes remaining in the match, using a huge step to turn back inside and put the Eels within 12 points of the Sea Eagles.

With five minutes remaining the Eels got on the outside of the Manly defence and Rory Brien showed his speed in space before placing a kick downfield. It landed perfectly in goal but Brien was penalized for jostling with Hopoate in the race to the ball.

Manly scored off a bouncing kick late in the game to end the Eels’ comeback and give Parramatta their first loss of the season.

MANLY SEA EAGLES 32 (William Hopoate, Michael Oldfield, Liam Higgins, James Cunningham, Jason Annear, Joseph Hawkins tries; Gary Riccardi 4 goals) def PARRAMATTA EELS 16 (Ken Sio 2, Rory Brien tries; Jaydin Tavita 2 goals).
