Female rugby league team ‘Olymp’ from Taldykurgan in Kazakhstan have arrived on an eight day visit to the UK, reciprocating a tour made by Rugby League European Federation officials to the Eastern European country last year.

The players and officials will play three matches, take coaching master classes and will be guests of two Engage Super League clubs prior to watching their home matches.
Olymp are celebrating their 20th anniversary and have been frequent winners of the National Championship of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The club has its own training base with two pitches and teams of all ages in both genders.

They added women’s rugby league two years ago, inviting prominent Russian coach Alexander Kolikov from Moscow to assist them.

Last year they were successful against Russian Women`s Rugby League Champion side Novokuznetsk and, in August, won a six team competition in the Moscow suburb of Khimki defeating the hosts who are acknowledged as the best side in Russia and guest side Huddersfield Ladies, 52-4.

Julia Bennison, Rugby League European Federation Regional Co-ordinator, Russia, who has organised the tour commented, “It has been less than a year since we visited Kazakhstan to meet people who wanted to play rugby league and it’s great to see them taking their passion further by coming to England to play and learn more about our sport.”

Coached by Vladimir Drozdov, the 19 strong party will be at the Galpharm Stadium to watch Huddersfield take on St Helens and will take in the traditional Easter derby between Leeds and Bradford on Thursday at Headingley Carnegie Stadium.

Gary Owram is acting as the team’s liaison officer and they will play matches against:

- Dudley Hills Diamonds, 29th March kick off 7pm at Bradford Dudley Hill ARLFC, Perry Lane, Bradford

- England Students, 31st March, kick off 7.30pm at Castleford Lock Lane

- Warrington Ladies, 2nd April, kick off 1.30pm at Great Sankey Leisure Centre, Warrington
