Brisbane halfback Peter Wallace is facing an extended stint on the sidelines in the National Rugby League (NRL) after scans of his left knee revealed a high grade medial tear.

Broncos coach Ivan Henjak will decide between youngsters Ben Hunt and Corey Parker with Hunt favoured to be Darren Lockyer's new halves partner against Canterbury in Sydney on Friday night.

"He's had the scan ... it's bad news," Henjak said.

"It's a high grade tear.

"You don't really know with those, it's a minimum of four weeks if everything goes right but it could easily be longer."

Wallace was carving up Cronulla in the Broncos' 44-16 demolition on Sunday before suffering the injury in the second half.

"He was having his best game by a country mile but we have to move on," said Henjak."

Henjak will mull over the make-up of his interchange bench to be sure he has all contingencies covered for the Bulldogs clash before finalising Wallace's replacement.

Hunt, 20, had experienced a torrid NRL debut against the Sharks in round 15 last season in an inexperienced Brisbane side weakened heavily by Origin commitments.

The backline in that 46-12 loss was Andrew McCullough at five-eighth, Alex Glenn and Steve Michaels in the centres, Jharal Yow Yeh and Antonio Winterstein on the wings and Dale Copley at fullback.

Henjak was confident Hunt or Parker could handle the job.

"Benny's been very good, I've been pleased with his progress this year," he said.

"I don't think he has any ghosts from that game (Cronulla).

"It was a tough ask, but he's pretty laid back and he probably feels he belongs a bit more around the place now than he did last year.

"He was good for us off the bench playing hooker against the Dragons and went looking for opportunities which was good.

"He's quite a smart little player."

Prop Nick Kenny will keep Wallace company on the sidelines for at least another fortnight after blowing a calf muscle at training late last week.

Meanwhile utility Matt Gillett is expected to escape a one match suspension by entering an early guilty plea to a charge of dangerous contact with the legs/feet during Sunday's win over Cronulla.

He will miss one game if he defends the charge and fails.

Gillett, who scored two tries in the centres on Sunday, is hopeful of playing despite suffering a low grade medial strain.

Henjak was pleased with Josh Hoffman's strong performance when he replaced Norman at fullback against the Sharks.

"He carted the ball back strongly, his involvement was high, he scored a try, looked quite dangerous and defended bravely," said Henjak.

"It's good to have some competition in that position."
