By DUNCAN JOHNSTONE-The Dominion Post The New Zealand Rugby League has backed its Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney amidst the Melbourne Storm salary cap scandal and says he is devastated by the shock development. NZRL chief executive Jim Doyle has spoken to Kearney, who is assistant coach of the Storm and is also working to his next Kiwis assignment, a test against Australia on May 7 in Melbourne. "Stephen is not part of the administration side of things, he is part of the coaching side of the club. One would expect him to focus on the coaching and have no idea of what anyone gets paid," Doyle said. "I spoke to him for quite a while and he is obviously gutted about the whole thing and very flat. He's very surprised and shocked." The Storm have eight New Zealanders in their first grade squad – Adam Blair, Hep Cahill, Matthew Duffie, William Isa, Jeff Lima, Sika Manu, Kevin Proctor and Chase Stanley. Doyle admitted concerns that the Storm's embarrassment could have a "flow-on effect" to the test match in Melbourne but believed the international would have its own entity that would distance it from league's biggest controversy. The test match will open Melbourne's latest purpose-built football stadium that will house the Storm, new Super 15 franchise the Melbourne Rebels and the city's two A-League football teams. "That adds an extra dimension to the test. It's also a Victorian government event," Doyle said, adding that the 31,000 test tickets were nearly sold out. The NZRL will receive a share of the gate. Doyle said the bigger imponderable would be how the Storm team reacted to this. He gathered from his talk with Kearney that they wouldn't lack motivation despite being stripped of their points after six rounds of this year's NRL and not being allowed any further points, guaranteeing the defending champions the wooden spoon. Doyle's views on Kearney and the resolution within the Storm camp back up those of Melbourne's head coach Craig Bellamy. "This is an absolute shock to myself, to our football staff, to our players," Bellamy said. "Personally, I am heartbroken. But this club has great character and values. We will not walk away from this challenge. We will stick tight together as a group and fight our way back from this." www.stuff.co.nz |
