John Greco at ANZ Stadium, Sportal The Canterbury Bulldogs have broken through for their first win of the Toyota Cup season with a strong 34-14 win over Parramatta at ANZ Stadium on Friday night. Desperate to get themselves off the bottom of the NYC ladder, the young Bulldogs played with tremendous spirit and set up the victory with three tries in the opening eight minutes. It was a fitting reward for Andrew Patmore's side, who have been close to snaring a couple of wins in the opening seven weeks but have come up just short. But they weren't going to be denied against the Eels, surviving a mini-revival in the second half and the sin-binning of fullback Nathan Massey to secure the six-tries-to-three win. It took just three minutes for the Bulldogs to get the scoring underway and it came in the simplest of circumstances. With the Eels bringing the ball out of their own 20m zone, a handling error by centre Ryan Morgan allowed Pao Pele to scoop on the loose ball and run 20 metres to score in the corner. Aidan Sezer hit a brilliant sideline conversion to make it 6-0. That try gave the young Bulldogs confidence and they had a second try just two minutes later. A brilliant offload by backrower Dean McGlinchey on the halfway sent centre Nehe Milner-Skudder into the clear and he drew the fullback before passing to Pele to grab his second try for a 10-0 lead. And it got even better just three minutes later as halfback Josh Kent was the beneficiary of a sensational backline move to get a try of his own. Milner-Skudder again played a significant role, getting on the outside of his marker before racing 30 metres downfield and giving Kent an easy passage to the line. Another uncharacteristic Sezer miss kept the scoreline to just 14-0 despite total dominance from the young Bulldogs. Both sides suffered from lapses in concentration as handling errors littered the contest for the next 25 minutes. But it was the Eels who steadied themselves first to get back into the contest with two tries either side of the break. First centre Morgan made up for his earlier error to get over the line four minutes before half-time and then Tavita scored three minutes after the resumption to reduce the deficit to 14-10. Without a win from the first seven rounds Canterbury could have panicked fearing another loss was on the cards but they dug in and responded six minutes later with a try of their own through centre Timoteo Lafai. Sezer found his range again, nailing the conversion for a 20-10 lead. The match threatened to turn in Parramatta's favour in the space of two minutes soon after though as first fullback Nathan Massey was sin-binned for a professional foul and then Eels centre Morgan crossed for his second try to bring the score back to 20-14. But the young Bulldogs regrouped again and could breathe a little easier when a Sezer penalty goal increased their lead to eight points with less than 20 minutes left. The Bulldogs then made victory safe with two tries in the last four minutes through Sezer and Massey to move the club off the bottom of the Toyota Cup ladder. Canterbury Bulldogs 34 Tries: Pele 2, Kent, Lafai, Sezer, Massey Goals: Sezer 5 Parramatta Eels 14 Tries: Morgan 2, Tavita Goals: Tavita 1 |
