![]() Wakefield Trinity Wildcats will be out to complete a notable double over Engage Super League champions Leeds Rhinos tomorrow with coach John Kear admitting victory at Murrayfield would far exceed the satisfaction he gained from their earlier success. Since the Wildcats produced a stunning 28-18 win over the Rhinos at Belle Vue in February, they have lost influential overseas duo Glenn Morrison and Shane Millard to injury while Danny Brough, Terry Newton and Shane Tronc have all left the club. With Matt Blaymire and recent recruit Paul Cooke also sidelined through injury, Kear says their win three months ago would pale in comparison to victory on the opening day of the Magic Weekend in Edinburgh. “I don’t think there’s any doubt about that,” he said. “From the team we had then, there was Millard, Brough, Tronc, Newton and Morrison, all of whom will be missing. “Add to that the fact that it’s not at home and it would be a far greater achievement. “We’re just going to go there to give it a shot. The pressure is off and we’re going to enjoy it.” Leeds coach Brian McClennan, whose side have the chance to leapfrog the Wildcats into eighth place, admits they are still haunted by their first ever away defeat by the Wildcats in Super League. “It always sticks in the memory when we cop a defeat,” he said. “They beat us fair and square but it’s given us extra determination for the Magic Weekend. We certainly plan to play much better.” The Yorkshire derby will bring down the curtain on day one at Murrayfield, where the action begins eight hours earlier with Bradford Bulls taking on Crusaders RL. Bulls coach Steve McNamara has had his team practising at 1pm this week and, although the atmosphere promises to be muted for the start of his match, he is a fan of the Magic Weekend concept. “We’re playing at a strange kick-off time and, although the crowd will build as the day goes on, there won’t be very much noise initially I wouldn’t have thought,” he said. “It’s going to be a different environment for our players to contend with but I think whenever you play at a big stadium like that it brings the best out in you. “Even if there aren’t many people in for the first game, the stay in the hotel, the bus ride to the game and playing at an international stadium gives you that feel of it being a big game.” Bradford have climbed to fifth place on the back of five-match unbeaten run but McNamara insists it is still early days. “We’re pleased with our progression,” he said. “It’s a fine line between winning and losing so we certainly don’t want to get carried away. “The players have very much got their feet on the floor. If we are to keep our run of form going, collectively we’re going to have to be very good.” The clash pits McNamara against his Bradford predecessor Brian Noble, while the Crusaders backroom staff also includes former skipper Iestyn Harris and ex-conditioner Martin Clawson. “A lot of our staff are with the Crusaders and I think they’ve got a very exciting project on their hands,” said McNamara. “With the squad they’ve got assembled and the amount of NRL players they’ve got, it makes them a real force. “I think they could have a crack for the eight if they keep on improving.” Harlequins RL will be looking to pick up from where they left off at Wigan Warriors when they go up against Hull FC in the second match at Murrayfield. The Londoners turned the table upside down by coming from 24-6 down at half-time to beat the leaders 38-26 at the DW Stadium and coach Brian McDermott admits it is important to build on their success. “We’ve used Friday’s result as affirmation of what we are trying to achieve,” he said. “That performance had been coming for a couple of weeks and proved to everyone that what we have been doing is working.” Warrington Wolves will take over at the top of the table - at least for 24 hours until Wigan play Huddersfield Giants - if they beat Salford City Reds by more than 24 points in the third match on. The Wolves beat the Reds 32-2 earlier this season and triumphed 50-18 over them at Millennium Magic in 2007 but coach Tony Smith is expecting a difficult test from Shaun McRae’s men. “It will be another tough game,” he said. “The last time we played it was a tough fixture. It took some time to crack that nut. “They have overturned some teams this year and on neutral turf it’s going to be a different environment.” www.superleague.co.uk |
