Fans expecting to witness wrestle-mania on the final day of Engage Super League’s Magic Weekend in Edinburgh will be in for a disappointment. The highlight of tomorrow’s action at Murrayfield is the top-four clash between Wigan Warriors and Huddersfield Giants, the two teams that have come in for widespread criticism for the alleged wrestling techniques adopted by their new Australian coaches. Last year Huddersfield boss Nathan Brown was accused of introducing the tactics into Engage Super League play-the-balls and this year Wigan coach Michael Maguire has been vilified by two of his rivals for supposedly slowing the game down. Brown, Engage Super League coach of the year in 2009, says he is proud of the fact that his team still have the best defensive record in the competition and insists that criticism of both the Giants and the Warriors is unfounded. “They just whinge because they don’t want to see people win, that’s all it is,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s jealousy but last year Huddersfield weren’t suppose to win and, when we kept on winning, people wondered why rather than looking at ways to beat sides. “We weren’t grapple-tackling or doing any of the illegal things, we were just doing some things better than some other teams. “We’ve got the best defence in the comp this year but no-one is whingeing about us because they’ve found someone else to whinge about. “Wigan are getting their numbers in the tackles and they’re doing some things that you are allowed to do. They’re not grapple-tackling or chicken-wing-ing and they’re the things that are illegal. “If the game needs to be quickened up it’s easy for the referees to quicken it up. They appear to be playing within the rules. To me they’re not doing anything illegal.” Maguire is hoping his side can bounce back from their shock home defeat by Harlequins RL but knows it will be tough to break down the best defence in Engage Super League. “Huddersfield are a good team, coached by a very good coach,” he said. “I know Nathan from back in Australia and I am well aware of what he can do. “It is certainly a big game for both sides but there is still a long way to go. We’ve got to treat it like any other game and hopefully we can come away with the win.” The Giants are poised to give a debut to winger Jermaine McGilvray who has been recalled from his loan spell with Barrow to plug the gap caused by injuries to Jamahl Lolesi and Brett Hodgson. Hull KR will seek to maintain their 100% record in the Magic Weekend when they take on St Helens in the last of the seven matches. Justin Morgan’s men twice won the Hull derby in Cardiff and got the better of Warrington Wolves at Murrayfield 12 months ago. “I love statistics when they work like that,” said Morgan. “It’s been good for us, we’ve enjoyed the games. To beat Warrington last year was no mean feat and hopefully we can keep the record going. “But St Helens are going great. It’s no coincidence that pitches have dried out a bit. They are a team that enjoys playing on a fast track and some of young kids are starting to show the effects of being blooded.” Rovers have won their last three meetings with Saints, including a 28-18 victory at Craven Park in March, and Saints boss Mick Potter is taking little notice of their recent slump in form. “Hull KR have had a hard run of games over the last few weeks and have been in some form,” said Potter. “They will come out and play their best game against us. I thought we were unlucky over there earlier in the season when we lost and like that game we will expect to be facing their best. “They are never under-motivated for any games against us, that’s for sure.” Castleford Tigers open proceedings tomorrow when they take on Catalans Dragons hoping to repeat their 20-16 victory in Perpignan earlier this year but coach Terry Matterson will be denied a reunion with his old team-mate Kevin Walters, the Dragons boss who has returned to Australia to tend to family matters. The pair played together at Brisbane Broncos in the early 1990s and have remained close friends ever since. “We played together for six or seven years and won a couple of NRL Grand Finals together so we’re very good friends and we’re still in regular contact,” said Matterson. “I’m pleased that we’ve drawn the Dragons and we’re playing Kevin’s team but it’s a pity that we can’t both win because he’s a good guy.” www.superleague.co.uk |
