Report

Danny Buderus grabbed a late winner as Leeds Rhinos wrapped up day one of the Engage Super League Magic Weekend with a dramatic comeback win over Wakefield Trinity Wildcats.

The champions were heading for a seventh defeat of the season as they fell 28-10 behind after conceding five first-half tries at Murrayfield.

But with Ryan Hall leading the way with a hat-trick, the Rhinos battled back to leapfrog the Wildcats and finally move into the top eight after a sluggish start to the campaign.

Buderus completed the fightback as he touched down with just three minutes remaining.

Brent Webb and Chris Clarkson also got on the scoresheet while Wakefield’s blistering start came courtesy of two tries from Damien Blanch and additional efforts from Ben Jeffries, Paul Johnson and Tevita Leo-Latu.

Leeds did not lead until Buderus’ last-gasp effort, although they thought they had made the perfect start as Rob Burrow jinked his way over after four minutes.

Video referee Phil Bentham cut short their celebrations after spotting an obstruction.

Wakefield made the most of the reprieve as Jeffries exploited a gap 10 metres out to claim the opening try.

Jeffries then turned provider after 14 minutes as Blanch outjumped the diminutive Burrow to claim the stand-off’s kick and touch down.

Jeffries converted both tries to give Wakefield hope, after unexpected wins for Crusaders RL and Harlequins RL earlier, of treating the 26,242 crowd to a third surprise win of the day.

Yet Leeds, eager to atone for last week’s loss at St Helens, responded with force.

A flowing move down the left ended with Hall racing over in the corner and the Rhinos followed up with a second in quick succession by attacking the same flank.

Ian Kirke broke through a tackle to find Hall outside and the winger passed back inside to send Webb over.

Kevin Sinfield kicked one of the conversions to pull the Rhinos back within two but Wakefield suddenly found an extra gear and claimed three tries in the space of eight minutes to open up an 18-point lead.

Johnson went over from dummy half for the first of them, creating the opening by faking a pass and spinning across the line.

Blanch then sneaked over in the corner for his second after gathering a Sean Gleeson pass on the bounce.

Leo-Latu then made the most of some weak tackling to force his way over with a 40-metre run from a play-the-ball.

With Jeffries taking his goal tally to four, the Wildcats were looking strong but Leeds put a different complexion on the scoreline as Keith Senior put Hall over for his second try as the hooter sounded.

With Sinfield converting to make it 28-16 at the break, Leeds, despite losing the services of Burrow with a knee injury, had momentum going into the second period.

They applied further pressure after the restart and it paid off as Clarkson held off several tackles to force his way over for his first Rhinos try.

Sinfield cut the gap further and Leeds were threatening to get right back into the game when Jeffries intercepted on his own 10-metre line and broke to halfway.

That earned the Wildcats valuable breathing space and a penalty soon after allowed Jeffries to nudge Wakefield’s lead up to eight points.

But it was not enough. Leeds maintained the pressure and Danny McGuire put Hall in for his hat-trick after a powerful run.

Sinfield’s goal cut the deficit to two and set up a nervy finish.

Wakefield almost regained the initiative as Aaron Murphy claimed a try but Bentham saw a knock-on from Luke George.

The Wildcats pressed again hoping to kill off the game but Leeds countered and Senior and Webb combined to create Buderus’ dramatic winner.
