NZPA ![]() Skipper Simon Mannering is targeting the New Zealand Warriors' next match for his long-awaited return to the National Rugby League. The Warriors have a bye next weekend, allowing Mannering some extra time to recover from a hamstring problem that has restricted him to just 1-1/4 games of football this season. The Auckland-based club's next fixture is against visitors North Queensland, for which two other frontliners, winger Manu Vatuvei and halfback Brett Seymour, are also likely to be available after being sidelined with respective hamstring and hand injuries. "With the bye, I can get right up with my rehab," Mannering said. "Hopefully I'll be 100 percent and be playing against the Cowboys." Mannering, 23, has had a frustrating time since being handed the captaincy in the off-season. The niggling hamstring complaint kept the second rower out of all three of the Warriors' trial matches as well as the opening round loss to Gold Coast. He led the Warriors out for the first time against Cronulla in round two, but then lasted just 22 minutes against the Broncos the following weekend, pounding the ground in pain after scoring his side's opening try. Given that the Warriors beat both the Sharks and the Broncos, Mannering can be said to have an unbeaten record as skipper. Since then, he has had to watch on as the Warriors' fortunes have dived, with just one win in five outings. "After being given a new role and not being able to fulfil is very frustrating," he said. "When the boys are doing it tough, it's hard not to be able to help. I just hope when I get back on the field, I can make a bit of difference there." Mannering's time out meant he wasn't a contender for selection for the Kiwis in their test against Australia in Melbourne on Friday night. He knew a call-up for what would be his 20th cap wouldn't happen if he failed to get game time against Canberra on Saturday. "We've got too many Kiwis playing well in the NRL for me to be an option to make the side," he said. "It's very disappointing not to be there, but I'm sure whoever is playing will do the job." Before the Warriors' 23-16 defeat to the Raiders, Mannering did cause a brief flurry of speculation that he might be about to make a shock early comeback. Ad Feedback Just over an hour before kick-off he, rather than stand-in skipper Micheal Luck, appeared in the Mt Smart Stadium tunnel for the coin toss, surprising even the referees. Minutes later, however, when the line-ups were confirmed, his name remained off the team sheet. Mannering said the unusual situation whereby he was called in for the coin toss had been caused by the Warriors' playing 17 being elsewhere at the time. "Lucky wasn't available to do it so I did," he said. "It was a bit weird and even the refs were looking at me." www.stuff.co.nz |
