Six key Talking Points to discuss from round eight of the NRL season

Is it time to lift the salary cap? Are the Titans really that good?
Are the Cowboys dead and buried? Have your say on the six
big points from the latest round of NRL action.

'TIS THE SEASON TO BE WORRIED:

Everyone knows it’s coming, yet no one seems to know what to
do when it gets here. The representative season is feared by
all NRL coaches and the reasons why will be on full display this
weekend. Thirteen players will show up at Brookvale Oval on
Saturday night for Manly’s clash with St George Illawarra less than
24 hours after being put through the representative ringer on Friday.
In any other round this battle between two premiership rivals would
have been a no holds barred affair, but it will instead be reduced to
a war of attrition. Meanwhile, Cronulla and South Sydney, who have
only two players each in action on Friday night, have the luxury of the bye.

Is the representative schedule fair on clubs? Tell us what you think.

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM:

Players who claim uncertainty about their future doesn’t affect their
performance on the field are liars - pure and simple. Of course, there
are varying levels of distraction and one would think the constant
speculation surrounding Israel Folau’s future would be starting to wear
thin at Red Hill. Brisbane Broncos coach Ivan Henjak said as much on
Friday night when he admitted he would like the saga to be over sooner
rather than later. While he maintained it was not distracting his side,
no doubt the Broncos players want to know what’s going on with Big Izzy
as much as the rest of us.

As the rumours and scuttlebutt get louder, will it have an adverse affect
on Folau and his Broncos?
Tell us what you think.

BUNNIES SINK, MANLY SWIM:

Sunday afternoon’s clash at ANZ Stadium was a chance to separate the
contenders from the pretenders. Both South Sydney and Manly were
sitting on four wins and three loses and had both impressed and
disappointed in equal measure this season. The magnitude of that
match would not have been lost on either side and it was a big early-season
test for both clubs. Eighty minutes later and the results were fairly conclusive;
Manly are the real deal this year while Souths still have plenty of work to do.

Is this game a fair reflection of Souths’ and Manly’s chances for 2010?
Tell us what you think.

CREDIT WHERE CREDIT'S DUE:

It’s about time Gold Coast Titans got a wrap. No matter how well they play
and how many games they win, John Cartwright’s men don’t immediately
spring to mind when the term ‘premiership contenders’ is mentioned. In the
past month, the Titans have played four top 8 rivals and beaten three of
them. Gutsy wins against Melbourne Storm (pre-salary cap) and Manly were
capped off by a fluent display against Penrith on Saturday night. And all this
without a fully-fit Scott Prince to call on.

Do the Titans deserve the tag of a genuine ‘premiership contender’?
Tell us what you think.

WHERE NOW DOWN COWS?:

At the beginning of the season, many astute judges predicted a solid 2010
for North Queensland Cowboys. With an imposing home record and the
game’s best player running the show, finals footy was a big possibility,
right? Wrong. The gates at Fortress Dairy Farmers have been well and truly
knocked down and Jonathan Thurston has not one, but two busted shoulders.
With Thurston, Aaron Payne and Matt Bowen all on the sidelines, simply
avoiding the bottom four should be a priority No.1 for Neil Henry’s men.

Are finals out of the Cowboys’ reach? Tell us what you think.

LIFT YOUR CAP:

NRL clubs are expected to use this week’s meeting of chief executives in
Sydney to call for an increase in the $4.1 million salary cap. They claim the
game can’t afford to lose talent like Israel Folau and Mark Gasnier to other
codes, nor can it afford another Storm-like cap breach. The problem the NRL
faces is that several clubs, notably Cronulla and Canberra, currently don’t have
$4.1 million available to spend on player salaries each year. Any increase in the
cap would push the rich and poor clubs even further apart and would leave
some financially-struggling clubs on the brink of extinction. The NRL will have
to decide whether allowing a couple of proud clubs to fold is worth it if it keeps
the most talented players in the NRL.

Do the NRL need to raise the salary cap? Tell us what you think.
