Should Kieran Foran play a pivotal role in a rare Kiwis' Anzac Test rugby league victory on Friday night, the Kangaroos can blame one of their own as a contributing factor. While the legendary Andrew Johns had aided the teenaged Foran's development as a potential long-term halfback or five-eighth at club and international level, it is Jamie Lyon who has performed the nurturing role on a day-to-day basis at Manly. Foran, who forms a new halves combination with Benji Marshall in the one-off international to open AAMI Park, cited Lyon's influence as instrumental is him making a comfortable transition to a playmaking role at the Sea Eagles. "Jamie's been massive," said Foran of a mentor who ends his four-year test exile against the Kiwis. "His enthusiasm and talk at training has helped me a lot. He's always giving me and Trent (Hodkinson) tips on what we can do better to help the team moved forward. "He's been around a long time now, his knowledge about the game is invaluable." Foran and fellow newbie Hodkinson were entrusted with filling the void left by Matt Orford, who left Sydney's northern beaches for the north of England at the end of last season. Orford's sudden move to Bradford could have been a setback for the premiership contenders, but in Foran and Hodkinson they seem well-set for the foreseeable future. Foran started his first full season in the National Rugby League (NRL) at halfback with Lyon outside him at five-eighth, once Hodkinson made a sound debut at No 7 both now find themselves a slot further out. As a combination the trio have gelled impressively. While the youngsters run the plays, a third opinion from the veteran centre is always available. "He'll often call the shots out there, Jamie lets the boys know where we need to get to and what we need in the next four or five minutes," Foran said. That type of reassurance has allowed the 19-year-old to mature to a point where Orford's loss is not as serious as first feared. Foran realised there was an opportunity, though it was a daunting prospect. "When Matt left we knew a lot was going to go on our shoulders," Foran said. "He'd been there for three years, he'd run that team round and everyone knew what they were doing. He was such a good organiser. He was a good talker. In the pre-season we did a lot of work with the boys around us." Foran was initially a quiet achiever but now is more comfortable barking out orders, even to Lyon who accepts he may have helped create a monster. "He's going great, he's a wonderful talent," Lyon said. "Even last year he put some really good games in for us. He's definitely going to be around for a long time." While Foran can look forward to a long Test career, the clubmate who has helped his maturity though his international career was over. Lyon has played only seven Tests since 2001, his last a Tri-Nations loss to England in 2006. The pressures of helping raise two young boys prompted him to seek an exemption from representative football, a request denied by the Australian Rugby League (ARL) because he did not fit the criteria of 10 years service or being older than 30. He was initially overlooked for NSW State or Origin duty but the 29-year-old was selected last year. He plays his first Test against New Zealand since 2003 after an unsettled Israel Folau was ignored as he contemplates a code switch to rugby or AFL. "I'm pretty happy how it worked out," Lyon said. He wanted to spend more time with five-year-old Riley and Jed, three, in favour of rep duty but now the kids love their footy as much as Dad. "The eldest reads the Big League (magazine) and watches all the players. I probably wouldn't hear the end of it from him if I wasn't playing." tvnz.co.nz |
