By DUNCAN JOHNSTONE - Stuff ![]() Australia's Darren Lockyer with the ANZAC trophy. Australian coach Tim Sheens admitted to some anxious moments as the Kiwis came storming back at his side in last night's Anzac Test in Melbourne. The Kangaroos conceded two late tries but had just enough desperation about them to see out a 12-8 victory. The rain poured on the grand opening of the AAMI Park but the two sides certainly produced plenty of heat. "We were back-pedalling and they were gaining momentum," Sheens said, owning up to a few nerves over the tense finish. "I thought we were controlling the game quite well. But a bit of possession swing and a couple of strange decisions and once New Zealand got some ball they made the most of it. "It wasn't a classic open game but conditions probably did that. I was happy with our effort but not always our execution and I'd think Steve (Kearney) would be the same." Sheens had a special mention for the Kiwi halves as Benji Marshall and Kieran Foran produced a promising effort. Benji hasn't had a happy couple of weeks and he played I thought really conservatively," said Sheens who coaches Marshall at the Wests Tigers. "But he threw the pass for the first try and he kept directing them around and he gave the young bloke Foran some support. "It was a game where he just tried to keep involved and he didn't try to do anything too super. But conditions didn't allow a lot of footwork and the Benji stuff. "The halves went forward well together and they needed to kick well. They were both up and down a bit there but at the end of the day we put a lot of pressure on them. "They still kept their composure and came back and got into the game." Sheens was thrilled to maintain Australia's massive dominance of the Anzac Test and predicts a tough Four Nations in October and November where the Kangaroos will defend the title against New Zealand, England and Papua New Guinea. www.stuff.co.nz |
