Luke Buttigieg Sportal ![]() Photograph Copyright : Getty Images Hooker Cam Smith is almost certain to miss the State of Origin opener for Queensland later this month and possibly the entire series after injuring his right elbow in Australia's 12-8 win over New Zealand in Friday's Anzac Test at AAMI Park. The Melbourne Storm skipper suffered the injury with 12 minutes left before half-time as he tackled club team-mate and Kiwis vice-captain Adam Blair, who rolled over in the tackle trying to get to his feet in a hurry and hurt Smith in the process. Smith remained motionless on the ground for more than a minute while waiting for medical attention to arrive and was eventually helped to his feet and assisted to the Kangaroos rooms where he had his elbow strapped. Scans on Saturday morning confirmed Smith had suffered ligament damage, ruling him out of the Storm's next two games against the Broncos and Raiders. Smith will visit a specialist early next week for further assessment of the injury. "I'm extremely disappointed that I won't be joining my team-mates tomorrow for our first game at our new home," he said. "It's shaping as a spectacular day for both our club and our members." "Having played at the stadium last night I know first-hand how incredible it really is." "It's not ideal being injured at this time of the year but I'm still hopeful that I will be back to full fitness when Origin rolls around later this month." Ryan Hinchcliffe will start at hooker in place of Smith for Sunday's clash. While Melbourne Storm cannot accrue any competition points for the rest of 2010 because of their salary-cap rorting the injury could still have major repercussions for the Maroons who will be seeking an unprecedented fifth successive Origin crown this year. "You take Cameron Smith out of any side and it's a blow to it," said Melbourne, Queensland and Australian full-back Billy Slater. "He's certainly going to be missed for the Storm and obviously it will be determined how long he's going to be out for whether he's going to be missed for Queensland." "But knowing Cam he's probably not known for his toughness but he'll be doing everything he possibly can to get out there in that Maroon jersey in game one." "Hopefully it's not as serious as it looked and hopefully he'll be back in a couple of weeks for the Origin." "We're going to miss him for Queensland," said Kangaroos and Maroons forward Sam Thaiday, whose superb offload back over his head as he was being pushed into touch in the left corner led to Brett Morris' second try of the night. "We're trying to go for five series in a row and Cam's a big part of that and has been a bit part of it since 2006 since we started that campaign." Smith's Storm team-mate Greg Inglis is also in doubt for Sunday's match with the Broncos after copping a corked hip. "The first thing I asked him was how he was after the game, I was thinking more about Origin," said Australian and Queensland skipper Darren Lockyer. "But he's definitely having a rest Sunday and GI's (Inglis) got a few ice packs on so I'm pushing he has a weekend off too." sportal.com.au |
