North Queensland Cowboys, minus inspirational captain Johnathan Thurston, have defied the critics by outclassing Sydney Roosters 32-14 at the SFS on Monday night.

North Queensland fullback Matt Bowen made a triumphant return to rugby league for the Cowboys with a superb comeback performance that included a 90 metre try to cap off what was a memorable night for the visitors.

North Queensland warmed up for its trip to Auckland with a 32-14 victory over the Sydney Roosters in the final match of the NRL's ninth round tonight (Monday).

The Cowboys were without two of their key players in captain Johnathan Thurston and Luke O'Donnell, both on the injured list along with back rower Steve Rapira, who has just signed to return to the Vodafone Warriors.
Despite their absences, North Queensland still came up with only its third win of the season, leading 18-10 at halftime and going on to score six tries to three.
Included in the Cowboys' line-up were former Vodafone Warriors Grant Rovelli and Leeson Ah Mau.
Scoring twice for North Queensland was winger Michael Bani while Matt Bowen, back after a long stint on the sideline, struck from long range for his try.
On Sunday, Melbourne's grim season continued as Brisbane ruined the Storm's stadium-opening party at their new AAMI Park home.
While Melbourne had won its first two games since its salary cap storm erupted, it couldn't continue the run, slumpingto one of its heaviest home defeats, losing 14-36.
Playing without the influential Cameron Smith, the Storm scored first but then had limited impact on the contest.
Brisbane centre Israel Folau, snubbed by the Australian selectors, scored twice while a penalty try was also awarded after Melbourne fullback Billy Slater used his boot to dislodge the ball from Jharal Yow Yeh's grasp as he was attempting to score a try.
In Sunday's only other match, former Vodafone Warriors centre Clinton Toopi's comeback reached another high as he scored two tries in helping Gold Coast edge Newcastle 38-36 in a stunning points-fest at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
On Saturday night, Manly was impressive in dismissing St George Illawarra 24-6 at Brookvale Oval.
Match details:

At Sydney Football Stadium, Randwick
Sydney Roosters 14 (Nick Kouparitsas, Todd Carney, Phil Graham tries; Todd Carney conversion).
North Queensland Cowboys 32 (Michael Bani 2, Matt Bowen, John Williams, Willie Tonga, Anthony Watts tries; John Williams 3 conversions; Ashley Graham conversion).
Halftime: 18-10 Cowboys.
Referees: Jason Robinson and Ashley Klein.
Crowd: 6478.
NYC: Roosters 32, Cowboys 24

Ironic that Roosters fans bitch about bad calls, their team had bad calls cost the Cowboys a grand final.

Hypocrisy runs rampant in the NRL, people always complain about bad calls that go against their team, but conviently forget about the bad calls that go in favour of their team.

That seems to be the way with the warriors as well, they seem to get more than their fair share of bad calls against them, so i like to see it when it is the other way round as well.
But on the other hand, it would be good to see the refs get their shit together and stop making bad calls at all.
