By WWOS staff![]() Melbourne Storm's superstars can deny it all they like, but their fellow players believe they knew exactly what was going on. (Getty) A former Melbourne Storm player has blown the whistle on the club's salary cap scandal, suggesting some players received wads of cash in secret. Though the Storm’s current playing list has been united in its silence since the affair erupted, a former player – speaking on the condition of anonymity to Rugby League Week (RLW) – said he was aware of illegal payments to several stars during his time at the club. “One guy told me he regularly got cash – it can never be detected, but it happened,” the ex-Storm player told the annual RLW Players’ Poll. In another damning indictment on the game in the wake of the Storm scandal, this year’s RLW poll also suggests rorting is rife at other NRL clubs, with many of the players surveyed insisting they know of payments in 'brown paper bags'. The 25th annual RLW poll was brought forward from July to May to give the NRL’s footballers their say on the biggest controversy to hit the League in 15 years – if not ever. The Storm’s sins triggered unprecedented comment, with the majority of respondents (62%) believing those at the centre of the saga were aware of their illegal payments, and the risks they were taking. “It’s an insult to our intelligence to say the players didn’t know what they were doing,” one angry respondent said. “They signed two different contracts – what did they think was going on? “They can blame (former chief executive) Brian Waldron, they can blame their managers, they can blame News Limited ... but at the end of the day this is your job and you know what you are getting paid.” Another suggested that he too had been informed of the rorting at the Melbourne club. “Of course some of the Storm players knew about it,” he said. “If you’ve signed two contracts, get more money in your account or even get a boat, how could you not?” Also in the 25th annual RLW Players’ Poll: – A new ‘best player in the game’ is crowned. – Willie Mason loses ‘most over-rated’ tag to another forward. – Michael Ennis takes ‘biggest sledge’ gong in a landslide.
