MELBOURNE Storm skipper Cameron Smith has been rated only a 50-50 chance of being fit for the first state-of-origin game this month. The Queensland hooker, who has been an integral part of the Maroons' four-year dominance, partially dislocated his elbow playing for Australia in its 12-8 win over New Zealand last Friday night, but had been hoping of a quick recovery in time for the clash against NSW on May 26. Storm football operations manager Frank Ponissi said Smith received a more optimistic prognosis from his specialist than the club medical staff had initially feared. ''It was slightly more positive (prognosis) than we thought,'' Ponissi said. STATHI PAXINOS www.smh.com.au |
