Rob Forsaith Sportal ![]() Photograph Copyright : Getty Images Brisbane lock Corey Parker has implored his underachieving side to continue improving as they seek to achieve back-to-back wins for the first time this season on Friday night against Gold Coast in what will be Parker's 200th NRL match. Parker's debut, as a burly bald-headed teenage prop, may have only been nine years ago but the game has changed so much in that time that it seems like an eternity for the Broncos vice-captain. The 28-year-old, who has seen plenty of talent pass through Red Hill in his time, was a little nostalgic as he relived his junior years at the club ahead of Friday's 'huge milestone'. Play Online Poker "When I started I had a shaved head and a slightly bigger frame, but the game was different back then - so that's my excuse," Parker joked. "When I came into first grade 10 years ago I was playing alongside some of the guys that I looked up to and idolised as a young kid, a lot of those guys are finished now." "Andrew Gee was a guy that I parked myself alongside at the club and (Shane) Webcke wasn't too far behind." "Looking back I wouldn't want it any other way, they were pretty fair guys to learn some traits off." Having been a part of the club's premiership-winning side of 2006 and someone who 'lives and breathes Broncos', Parker would obviously not be enjoying Brisbane's slide down the ladder in 2010. The club has won only three games this season but will enter the derby with a major boost of confidence after upsetting the Storm last week in Melbourne. Parker urged his side to backup the performance and show the competition what they are capable of in 2010. "When things aren't going your way, you're never that far away from turning something around and having things click." "Last week was a huge step in terms of what we've been looking for over the last six or seven weeks." "We played for the full 80 minutes against Melbourne and it just goes to show ... if we do the things that work well and we can sustain that for 80 minutes, we're a chance of beating anyone." "We did a lot of things right, but if we rest our laurels on that we'll go backwards." Parker was named Brisbane's player of the year in 2009 and has been in hot form this season aside from missing a few games with a knee injury. With Dallas Johnson now plying his trade in France, a vacancy has opened up in the Maroons side at lock, but Parker was unsure about his chances of getting a representative call-up for Queensland. "I'd be lying if I said it's not there in your achievements and goals to do at the start of the year, but the last time I played was 2004." "After six years I'm still giving myself hope, if the day ever comes again, well I'll just keep playing footy for the Broncos (for now)." http://sportal.com.au/league-news-display/parker-primed-for-200th-91086 |
