Adam Lucius Sportal ![]() Photograph Copyright : Getty Images Manly is resigned to losing international prop Josh Perry to English club St Helens, but remain hopeful of retaining Kiwi Test centre Steve Matai. Perry is yet to confirm his move to the UK Super League but will be forced out of Brookvale due to salary cap restraints. The Sea Eagles will formally announce his departure after the State of Origin series, with the 29-year-old keen to concentrate on helping NSW regain the interstate crown after four lean years. Quizzed about his future on Wednesday, Perry said: "I think we'll get something sorted out after Origin." "I just want to play my best footy and not worry about all that other stuff and hopefully get across the line for NSW." "We will wait until after Origin and see what happens." Perry's career was at the crossroads when he departed Newcastle in acrimonious circumstances in 2008. But the hulking prop has resurrected his representative career at Manly, playing for NSW and Australia and helping Manly take out the 2008 premiership The Sea Eagles are reluctant to let Perry go but have little choice due to the cap. They need to stitch up upgraded deals for young halves combination Trent Hodkinson and Kieran Foran. Matai's future is also up in the air, with the hard-hitting New Zealander keen to stay but no closer to signing. "We are talking but nothing has been set in stone," he said. "I haven't (signed) yet but hopefully we can get that sorted out in the next few weeks so I can start focusing on playing some good footy." "The boys are great and the staff are great and I definitely want to stay." The Sea Eagles have the majority of their stars under contract for the next two to three years but will have to shed a number of fringe players to remain under the salary cap. http://sportal.co.nz/league-news-display/perry-expected-to-go-91115 |
