Trent Barrett is right in the frame to keep his five-eighth jersey when the New South Wales team is named on Monday night.

The decision is expected to come down to Barrett and Manly's Jamie Lyon for the No 6 jersey - with a lot riding on the Cronulla captain's performance against the in-form Penrith at Toyota Stadium on Sunday.

Barrett has been the forgotten man in Origin talk leading up to Game One on May 26 with Todd Carney (Roosters) and Greg Bird (Gold Coast) more in the limelight. The poor form of Barrett's Sharks has not helped.

Even NSW captain Kurt Gidley has been nominated as a possible selection in the halves to allow Jarryd Hayne (Parramatta) or NSW Country debutant Josh Dugan to play at fullback.

But with the exception of forced changes to last year's winning Game Three line-up - interchange utility Craig Wing (rugby in Japan), winger David Williams (injured) and prop Justin Poore (overlooked for City-Country) - the Blues selectors are expected to remain loyal to the 17 that won 28-16 to prevent a 3-0 whitewash.

Carney's club coach, Brian Smith, implored NSW selectors to think carefully before throwing talented players on the rise - like Carney and Dugan - into the Origin cauldron. And he speaks from experience, having to deal with Jarrod Mullen (one game in 2007) at Newcastle, who was "a pretty shattered boy" after his treatment.

"It's not like getting dropped from your club team," Smith said.

"It's the pinnacle of our sport and you are the one who's got dropped. Then there's the stories: 'Will he ever come back again? Is he ever going to be good enough?

"It's all fail, fail, fail. And that's tough for a young bloke."

Smith said Carney had impressive talents and was the type of player who could win a game for NSW in the future.

"But personally I think he's got to do a lot more yet to get himself back - physically, mentally, emotionally. You throw him into that arena, it could backfire.

"This is not about age. Putting guys in and hoping they'll be right and then discarding them - at that level - just shatters them."

Carney missed 18 months of senior football after being sacked by Canberra in 2008 but was signed by the Roosters for this season.

Smith said Carney was a wreck on Monday mornings, showing his NRL-hardened fitness was not quite there yet.

NSW selectors believe he could have a defensive weakness under the intensity of Origin.

Brett Kimmorley and his Canterbury team-mate, Michael Ennis, will retain the halfback and hooking roles.

Paul Gallen missed Origin III with a shoulder injury last year and will find it hard to displace Trent Waterhouse, Ben Creagh or Anthony Watmough from the back row.

Greg Bird's best chance to force his way back into a NSW jumper after two years is seemingly the utility spot on the bench, held by Test player Luke Lewis.

The three other interchange players from 2009 - Glenn Stewart, Brett White and Tom Learoyd-Lahrs - appear safe. It means Willie Mason's valiant attempt to re-enter Origin might be thwarted, at least for May 26.
