NZPA ![]() Clinton Toopi's successful return to the National Rugby League (NRL) has been temporarily stalled by a recurrence of the knee problems that threatened his career. Toopi has been ruled out of tonight's Queensland derby between the Gold Coast and Brisbane Broncos in Brisbane after failing to complete a training session at the Titans' base at Robina. Fortunately for the former New Zealand Warriors and Kiwis centre the problem is considered minor and he should be fit to return to first grade action in round 12 against the Roosters, with next week's bye offering added time to recover. The Titans signed Toopi to a one-year deal aware of his history of knee problems and realised the 29-year-old would have to be carefully managed as he returned to the NRL for the first time since 2006. Titans coach John Cartwright said the short turnaround - the Titans played Newcastle on Sunday - counted against Toopi being able to back up against Kangaroos and Queensland centre Israel Folau. Toopi has been replaced by Josh Graham, who is promoted from reserve grade to make his 50th appearance in the NRL. Graham missed the start to the season after suffering a broken foot in last year's semifinal loss to the Broncos. Toopi started his comeback season in the Queensland Cup competition but a knee injury to former dual international Mat Rogers enabled him to play against Manly in round seven last month. He did a fine job against Manly's formidable centre pairing of Steve Matai and Jamie Lyon as the Titans won 24-22. Toopi scored a try in a win over Penrith in the following round and notched a double in the Titans' 38-36 defeat of the Newcastle Knights last weekend. Rogers, who is off contract at the end of the season, is still about a month away from being fit to return. |
