NZPA Star playmaker Johnathan Thurston is rated a long shot to make a National Rugby League return for North Queensland against the New Zealand Warriors, but coach Neil Henry will wait until tomorrow to make the final call. Henry said Thurston, back rower Luke O'Donnell and prop Carl Webb all remained doubtful for tomorrow's match in Auckland, with the biggest question mark being over Thurston. "JT is in the most doubt," he said. "I think he's at long odds to be playing." Thurston damaged the AC joint in his right shoulder against Melbourne two weeks ago and sat out the Cowboys' win over the Roosters on Monday. Henry said the Kangaroos and Queensland halfback would be assessed tomorrow to see how he pulled up after training today. He said playing with an injection was a possibility, but only if there was no structural damage to the shoulder. "We don't want to risk him and possibly have him out for four to six weeks." With the Cowboys third from bottom on the table and having a bye coming up, Henry said he would naturally want to field Thurston, as well as O'Donnell and Webb, who are getting over knee and ankle problems respectively. "It's just a matter whether they can contribute in the game," he said. "You can't take three players out there and run the risk that all three can't get through the game. It would leave our bench very skinny and we can't afford that." While the Cowboys are uncertain over the availability of three key players, the Warriors welcome back three of their own in winger Manu Vatuvei, halfback Brett Seymour and skipper and second rower Simon Mannering. The trio were all sidelined during the club's present run of three successive defeats, which has left them in 10th spot, two points above the Cowboys. The losing streak has also thrown up a worrying trend for the Warriors -- their inability to record first-half points. In all, they have been kept scoreless in the opening spell of four of their past five games. Lock Micheal Luck said the Warriors, who are coming off a bye, had looked at their defence as well as their attack in addressing the issue. He pointed to the ease with which Canberra's big forwards had been able to rumble up the middle during the Raiders' 23-16 win here at Mt Smart Stadium when the Warriors were last in action. "You can't score tries when you're up the other end of the field," he said. "If we can keep the opposition down at their own end, we will get more opportunities. It's something we've not done." The workaholic Luck, who last week signed a new two-year deal with the Warriors, whom he joined from the Cowboys before the 2006 season, said the bye had come at a good time for the club. "We've got some big guys coming back this week, a lot of guys freshened up," he said. But Luck refused to put the Warriors' poor recent results down to their injury toll. "That's not it," he said. "We played ordinary football against teams that played great football." The Warriors and North Queensland go into the match level in their head-to-head history, having shared their 26 previous encounters with 13 victories each. The Cowboys drew level with a 34-12 win at Mt Smart Stadium in their only meeting last year. www.stuff.co.nz |
