Dominant first half sets up the New Zealand Warriors for their 24-12 win over the North Queensland Cowboys

A dominant first half set the Warriors up for a 24-12 victory over the North Queensland Cowboys in the NRL match at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland last night to snap a three-game losing streak.

Tries to Ukuma Ta'ai, Lewis Brown and James Maloney gave the home side a 20-nil lead at halftime. Coach Ivan Cleary says they used last week's bye to good effect. He says they prepared well for the match and can now hopefully build some momentum. Cleary says having halfback Brett Seymour back gave the side much needed direction. He says Seymour has played only one game this season so will only improve.

Wing Kevin Locke scored the Warriors' only try in the second half to seal the win with 10 minutes to play, after the Cowboys fought back midway through the second spell. The victory over the Cowboys may have come at a hefty price. Wing Manu Vatuvei has been struck down by injury again in his first match back since a round three hamstring problem. Ivan Cleary says it is a new injury. He says it is not the hamstring but Vatuvei will have X-rays to confirm the damage.

Both coaches have raised concerns over the performance of Australian referee Ashley Klein. Cowboys coach Neil Henry says Klein lacked composure. He says Klein got flustered a couple of times and it was not a great refereeing display. Ivan Cleary has similar concerns. He says Klein looked unsure at times and that created frustration for the players. The win lifts the Warriors to eighth on the ladder for the time being.

In matches played in Australia, a hat-trick of tries from centre Greg Inglis has led Melbourne Storm to a 17-6 victory over Canberra. Injury-ravaged Newcastle has powered to a 34-18 win over the Sydney Roosters.
