Blockbusting Warriors wing Manu Vatuvei could be set for another lengthy spell on the sideline after he suffered a serious leg injury in the 24-12 victory over the Cowboys at Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday.

Vatuvei was making his comeback from a reoccurring hamstring injury.

A post-match x-ray cleared the Kiwi's wing of a break and further scans next week will reveal the extent of the damage.

The latest complaint, which is located between the ankle and knee region on his left leg, occurred 14 minutes into the first-half.

Vatuvei was clearly distressed, but he hobbled around until the 45th minute before finally being replaced.

Jerome Ropati was forced to protect his normally devastating partner in defence as Warriors coach Ivan Cleary decided against pulling his star, despite admitting he was in serious pain.

"He's gone for an x-ray. It's not good," Cleary said despondently.

"He injured it early and we were undecided whether to leave him out there, or bring him off. He was becoming a passenger. Jerome did a good job protecting him."

"[Cowboys wing John] Williams was having trouble under the high ball with Manu chasing it, so that's another reason we strung it out."

Stand-in Warriors captain Micheal Luck spelled out what a difference 'The Beast' made to the side.

"There's something about him. He played the majority of the first-half on one leg," Luck said. "He's a great individual and a great bloke to have in your team, so hopefully there's nothing wrong and he can come out next week."

Even with the late inclusions of Johnathan Thurston, Luke O'Donnell and Carl Webb - the Cowboys' completion rate was horrible.

They finished six of 16 sets in the first spell, on the back of 11 handling errors.

Thurston admitted he failed to exploit Vatuvei's injury, which saw a weakened right side begging to be targeted.

Cowboys coach Neil Henry was frustrated at his side's inability to hold possession.

"We had six attacking sets in first-half and didn't complete one," he said. You can't win games when you come in [at halftime] 20 points down."

Henry and Cleary were in agreement referee Ashley Klein's performance needed reiviewing.

"Ashley Klein was not up to standard. I don't know where his head was at," Henry said.

Cleary thought six mandatory penalties were missed and said the game's end was a 'farce' where Klein sent Cowboys centre Willie Tonga to the bin after the final hooter.

There is much to improve for the Warriors, who lost the second spell 12-4.

Had Ropati not pushed Ashley Graham out in the corner the Cowboys could have pulled within two with 10 to play.

However, it was a much improved performance with aggression in defence a particular highlight from the home side.

"We started with intent and we forced some errors with our defence, which we haven't done in recent weeks," Luck said. "That's encouraging. Now we have to ramp it up and make sure we're doing it every week.

Luck paid tribute to the Warrior's best with Brett Seymour's return sparking special mention.

"He's probably one of the better talking halfbacks I've played with. You're not wondering what your role is when Buster's on the field," Luck said of Seymour.

"Sam [Rapira] is one of the best props running around in the competition. He was enormous tonight and that was Russell [Packer's] best game of the year. A lot of that is down to Buster saying 'get us forward' and he'll only get better the more he plays."

The Warriors will have their captain Simon Mannering 100 percent fit and confident next week after the backrower ruled himself out on Thursday.
'get us forward' and he'll only get better the more he plays."
