Warriors’ winning streak at four but only after just repelling a stirring second comeback in tonight’s 10th-round NYC encounter at Mount Smart Stadium. The competition-leading Cowboys rebounded from their Monday night loss to the Sydney Roosters by rushing to a 16-0 halftime lead. An already grim score-line became even worse for the home side in the opening seconds of the second spell when the Vodafone Warriors immediately surrendered possession from the kick-off, offering the Cowboys a gilt-edged attacking opportunity which they took advantage of. From the resulting set interchange forward Jason Taumalolo scored between the posts only for Kyle Feldt to inexplicably miss the conversion from in front. It still left North Queensland with a seemingly insurmountable 20-0 lead but, 22 minutes later, the visitors had been all but lassoed. The fleet-footed Glen Fisiiahi showed off his scorching pace to good effect, scoring two tries himself, and interchange hooker Nafe Seluini also sliced through to slash the margin to 16-20 with 16 minutes still to play. But in the end the Vodafone Junior Warriors weren’t quite able to get the job done on a night when a comeback win would have been a remarkable achievement after the way the team had played in the opening half. There were plenty of willing workers including winger Elijah Niko who carried the ball 21 times. The result allowed the Cowboys to firm at the top of the points table but was a big blow to the Vodafone Junior Warriors’ plans to make it five wins on end and surge towards the competition’s top four. They’re back at home next Sunday, facing South Sydney. Match details: At Mount Smart Stadium, Auckland Vodafone Junior Warriors 16 (Glen Fisiiahi 2, Nafe Seluini tries; Carlos Tuimavave conversion; Shaun Johnson conversion).
