ROOKIE Will Tupou scored an incredible individual try two minutes into overtime to give North Queensland a drought-breaking victory and officially end Newcastle's finals hopes.

The 20-year-old winger used some twinkle-toed running on the left touchline to beat two defenders after the lower-table derby at Dairy Farmers Stadium was tied 24-24 at the end of regulation time.

It was sent into extra-time when Newcastle's Cooper Vuna forced his way over in the corner with just over a minute left, and video referee Phil Cooley carefully discounted Cowboy calls for an obstruction.

Knights captain Kurt Gidley's sideline conversion, taken with 45 seconds left, hit the right upright and bounced through.

Earlier, it had seemed fitting that the man who scored two tries in North Queensland's first win for five matches had signed a four-year Super League contract only a couple of days before. Luke O'Donnell, the Australia forward who has joined Huddersfield, was that man as captain Johnathan Thurston savoured his first victory in Cowboy colours for 11 outings. Lock O'Donnell scored his first try in the 14th minute, and his second in the 66th.

The tussle was dominated - and interrupted - by injuries. Knight Isaac De Gois suffered severe cuts to his mouth when he clashed heads with Matt Scott and then collected the prop's knee for good measure on the way down. Novocastrian five-eighth Ben Rogers was chaired off by trainers with a knee problem. Cowboy Dan Hogan needed assistance when concussed in the final 10 minutes.

But another injury that did not sideline its possessor is likely to eclipse all of those. Captain Thurston has nerve trouble in both feet but wants to play in the Four Nations.

NORTH QUEENSLAND 28 (L O'Donnell 2 W Tonga W Tupou A Watts tries J Thurston 4 goals) bt NEWCASTLE 24 (A Uate 2 B Rogers C Vuna tries K Gidley 4 goals) in golden-point extra time at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Referee: Chris James, Steve Lyons. Crowd: 12,146.
