NRL clubs dig in over commissioners

NRL club chairmen have voted unanimously to block plans for News Ltd and the ARL to appoint the game's first independent commissioners and called on the NRL not to make any major financial decisions before the new body is implemented - including changes to the salary cap and a new television deal.

The resolutions were contained in a strongly worded statement after a lunchtime meeting at Canterbury Leagues Club yesterday attended by the chairmen of 14 of the 16 clubs.

With Melbourne not having a chairman and also not on the invite list because of the club's ownership by News Ltd, Warriors chairman Mark Flay was the only absentee.

The meeting demanded the independent commission be ''truly independent'' from the outset. The chairmen also felt the commission would not be independent if News Ltd and the ARL were to appoint four commissioners each before handing over control of the game.

There were also concerns about News Ltd's conflict of interest as part-owner of both the NRL and Fox Sports, prompting the meeting to call for the NRL to hold off finalising any ''negotiations that impact on the broader interests of the game''.

NRL chief executive David Gallop last night said there had never been any intention to finalise the television deal before the independent commission was implemented.
