Kangaroos half-back Johnathan Thurston is optimistic he can overcome an ankle injury in time to play in the Four Nations tournament.

Thurston tore a ligament in his ankle early this month and has also had surgery to fix a nerve problem in his feet.

Thurston says he will be cutting it fine but he should recover in time to play in the series.

"That's still 10 or 12 weeks away before we get in there so they said about eight weeks with this injury," he said.

"[I'm] in the cast for a couple of weeks and then start getting physio on it and then in the moon boot for four weeks and start running after that."
