![]() Catalans Dragons have agreed to release loose forward Dallas Johnson just 12 months into a three-year contract to enable him to return to Australia’s National Rugby League. The 27-year-old tough-tackling forward, who joined the Perpignan club from Melbourne Storm a year ago, is cutting short his stay in the south of France after agreeing a three-year deal with North Queensland Cowboys. Johnson, a Queensland State of Origin regular who made his Test debut in 2007, was an ever-present with the Dragons until being handed a one-match ban in July and then missed the club’s Carnegie Challenge Cup semi-final because his wife was about to give birth. He will make his final Engage Super League appearance in Saturday’s season-ending game against Huddersfield Giants at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium. “I want to be clear that I and my family have truly enjoyed our life in Perpignan,” he said. “Unfortunately the football side did not work out on the field this year but I did not seek a contract in the NRL. “This opportunity came up and, with my daughter born only two weeks ago, I just think it will be better for my family to go back home next year. “It was a big decision to leave but the opportunity to play for the Cowboys and to establish our home base from Townsville was too good. “I want to thank everyone at the club for giving me the opportunity to play for the Dragons and experience a new life. “I wish all the players and fans the best for next season and want to finish on a good note with a win next week for our last game against Huddersfield.” Catalans chairman Bernard Guasch said: “Dallas has impressed everyone at the club with his work on and off the field, but I understand his position and the fact he is still young enough to go back home with his family and still play at the highest level. I wish him all the best for his future.” Cowboys executive director Peter Parr said: “We’re delighted that Dallas has agreed to join the Cowboys from 2011 on a three-year deal. “He’s a player whose outstanding record speaks for itself. Not only will we benefit from his tireless work-rate, but his leadership on and off the field will also be a great addition to our team.” Johnson will be part of a major clear-out in Perpignan as new coach Trent Robinson seeks to pick up the pieces from a dismal season which has left the club staring at a second wooden spoon in five years. The club have so far confirmed the departures of Olivier Elima, Steven Bell, Brent Sherwin, Dimitri Pelo and brothers Kane and Andrew Bentley. So far Robinson has recruited scrum-half Scott Dureau from Newcastle Knights and former Bradford Bulls hooker Ian Henderson from New Zealand Warriors. www.superleague.co.uk |
