![]() Hull FC coach Richard Agar is expecting a backlash from Leeds Rhinos as the clubs battle it out for fourth spot in the engage Super League on Saturday. The winners at the KC Stadium on the final weekend of the regular season will secure a meeting with table-toppers Wigan Warriors in the play-offs while the losers are likely to finish sixth. For Hull, fourth would represent a significant achievement after an injury-plagued season but for defending champions Leeds the match will be all about putting their Challenge Cup final nightmare behind them. The Rhinos were thrashed 30-6 by Warrington Wolves last weekend to make it four final defeats in 11 years, and Agar knows his side could be the ones made to pay. He said: “They’re obviously on the back of a defeat at Wembley last week and the emotional and physical toll that’s taken remains to be seen. “They’re a very experienced side, they’re defending champions, and we shouldn’t forget that. They’ll be looking to right a few wrongs from last week and try to secure a spot in the top four. “Any team that contains the likes of (Danny) McGuire, (Rob) Burrow, (Kevin) Sinfield and (Brent) Webb are always going to pose a major threat with the ball.” Agar was surprised by the margin of Warrington’s victory but had sympathy for Saturday’s opponents. “Everyone was anticipating (seeing) two great attacking sides and it probably didn’t work out that way but that’s rugby league, sometimes it can very much be on the day,” he added. “It was undoubtedly Warrington’s defence that put the strangle on and demoralised Leeds and they made some big plays at the right time.” Hull’s hopes of victory have been boosted substantially by the presence in their squad of regular half-back pair Sean Long and Richard Horne. Both players have been sidelined by injuries this season, most recently Long with a dislocated elbow and Horne with a groin problem, and they have not started a game together since Easter. Agar said: “They’ve both had pretty significant injuries but it’s great to have them back and I think both players will undoubtedly bring some confidence to our team, give us some direction and also free up some guys who have been playing in their spots to take up other positions in the team. “The boys have got a spring in their step and it’s great at this stage of the year to have so many fit and fresh bodies on the park. “Hopefully they can hit the ground running because they bring an awful lot in terms of the skills they possess and their presence.” While Wigan await the winners in the first round of the play-offs, defeat for Hull on Saturday would set up a probable derby clash with Hull KR that would mean elimination for the losers. “There’s a lot at stake,” he explained. “It’s a straight shoot-out for fourth, which brings you a second bite of the cherry, so it’s one both teams want to win. It’s a good way to finish with an intense game that’s got a lot riding on it. “Either way, for us it’s really exciting. We’ve had our place secured in the play-offs for a long time but we’d like to get hold of that fourth spot. If we don’t, there’s a pretty mouth-watering tie if we play Rovers. “The fact we’ve had our halves missing for large chunks of the year, it has had an impact on our season, and it would be just reward for our boys to make that fourth spot. “It was one of our goals at the start of the year and that’s still very much within our grasp.” www.superleague.co.uk Have your say, click here to register |
