Huddersfield Giants gear up for Valvoline Cup play-off clash

GIANTS Under 20s Player of the Year Jacob Fairbank is hoping to make it a double celebration with victory over Hull FC in tonight’s Valvoline Cup elimination play-off at the YMCA (7.30pm).

The 19-year-old former England Community Lions back-row forward scooped the top individual award to reward his consistent performances throughout 2010.

But while he was delighted to have received the honour, he knows its significance will diminish if they fail to beat the Airlie Birds at Laund Hill.

“I’m really looking forward to it, we have already beaten Hull once this year at home and we have taken a lot of confidence from that,” he said.

“Hopefully we can do it again. I’ve never been past the first round of the play-offs before, so that would be a nice bonus too!

“Our first-half performances haven’t been great for the last few weeks but we’ve been coming back into the games, so a big start is a target for us instead of constantly chasing games.

“After being named the Player of the Year I’m desperate to back it up with success in the play-offs.

“It’s a really big game for everyone and we certainly don’t want our season to end just yet.”

Under 20s: Whiteley, McGillvary, Worthington, J Griffin, Harrop; Ansell, Wood; Walker, Carlile, Senior, Orwell, Cording, Fairbank, Barlow, Tasker-Howard, Murphy, Fox, Peltier.

Salford City Reds have taken their recruitment for 2011 to seven new faces with the capture of Wigan overseas duo Iafeta Paleaaesina and Phil Bailey.

Prop forward Paleaaesina, 28, has signed a three-year contract while second rower Bailey, 30, has penned a two-year deal.

Both were out of contract with the Warriors at the end of the season and were not offered new deals.

They will join Luke Patten, Chris Nero, Stephen Wild, Tevita Leo-Latu and Vinnie Anderson at a new-look Reds team for a final season at The Willows before the club moves across the city to their new stadium next to the M60 and the Trafford Centre.
