A YOUNG Rugby League star fell 150 feet to his death during a drinking binge to celebrate finishing his A-levels.

Andrew Curwell, 18, plunged from sheer cliffs onto the beach below as he looked for his missing wallet.

He and 11 friends paid bar crawl organisers VIP £5 each to be taken round the bars and clubs of Newquay, Cornwall. The Leeds Rhinos academy player left his pals to look for his wallet and £100 spending money, saying that losing it was “the worst thing that could happen to me”.

Andrew had finished his exams three weeks before and gone on holiday with friends from Rishworth School in Halifax, where he was a star pupil.

The group drank in several bars in the town on the Saturday night in June 2009, before Andrew noticed he had lost his wallet when he tried to get into a club.

He was found on the beach with head and body injuries early the next morning. He was almost double the drink-drive limit.

Yesterday Andrew’s tear-ful mum Janet told a Truro inquest that it was rare for her son to get drunk.

She said: “He was a rugby player and always training. He did drink sometimes but it was unusual.”

Deputy Cornwall coroner Barrie Van den Berg recorded a verdict of accidental death. He said: “There was a combination of being under the influence of alcohol, in an area he didn’t know well, it was very dark, and he fell over the edge.”

Forward Andrew, who had already played for Rhinos’ under-18s team, was said to have a bright future.

His parents declined to comment after the hearing.
