Matt Gillett Wins Dally M Rookie Award

MATT Gillett set himself a goal of playing just one NRL game this season and last night walked away with the rookie of the year award for the whole competition.

Gillett was named Dally M Rookie of the Year on a night where the Broncos took home three awards.

Gillett's story is one of a second chance.

In 2008 the Bribie Island junior came to the Broncos under-20s and played eight games before losing interest.

He gave up the chance to play in the NYC grand final that year when he went back to Arana Hills to 'play with his mates'.

Last year though he decided to knuckle down on football and had a sterling year in the Queensland Cup with Norths Devils.

It prompted the Broncos to sign him again and give him a pre-season, which turned into an NRL debut in round one.

By midway through the year Gillett was talked about as a future Origin star and last night received the first big award of the year.

"I feel very proud," said Gillett.

"I thought I'd just get one game, I didn't think I would get as many as I did."

Sam Thaiday also won on the night for second rower of the year and Tariq Sims was named Dally M player of the year in the under-20 competition.
