EVEN if the Dragons win the premiership this season, Wayne Bennett believes it will be several more years before the team reaches its full potential and the master coach hopes to still be in charge when it does.

Bennett, whose three-year contract with St George Illawarra expires at the end of next season, has revealed he had already been approached by chief executive Peter Doust about extending his time in charge of the famous club but was yet to make a decision on his future. However, the six-time premiership-winning coach praised the club and gave the best indication yet that he may stay beyond next season.

''All I haven't done is make a decision about my future, that's all I haven't done,'' Bennett said. ''The club has been great to me, the players have been really, really good … easy to work with and really good blokes. The club has been 10 out of 10, I haven't got a complaint here. I just haven't made a commitment beyond next year. I have got a three-year contract with one year to go and I haven't changed anything, not because I don't want to - just because I want to make sure the next decision I make is the right decision. It's as simple as that.''

Asked if he had been asked to make a decision on his future, Bennett said: ''Yeah I have. Peter and I have talked about it all and he is happy with my position and I am happy with his.''

Bennett said he would consider his future when he goes home to Brisbane at the end of the season but was unsure whether he would make a decision then.

''I may not,'' he said. ''I'll be back here in 2011, I know that. I'm just in no rush - I don't see why I need to hurry, I think I've got a job here if I want it.''

Meanwhile, Bennett said his sole focus was helping the Dragons win their first grand final as a joint venture and, despite the team being premiership favourites, he believes they will only continue to improve in the seasons ahead. ''I don't think we have hit the pinnacle of what we can do here yet,'' he said. ''I wouldn't think that these guys are at the pointy end of their careers right now. They are young men and have got a lot of football in front of them.''

Asked if would still be around at St George Illawarra to see the team reach its potential, Bennett responded: ''I hope so.''

Star Dragons fullback Darius Boyd, who followed Bennett from Brisbane to the Dragons last year and is also off contract at the end of next season, said he would be influenced by whether his mentor stays.

''He has been the only coach I have had club-wise and he has been great for me, personally, outside of football,'' Boyd said. ''He has been someone to talk to really, he has been great like that and definitely if he decided to leave I would have to weigh up some options. But I've had heaps of fun here and I really enjoy the club so I would love to stay. I have really enjoyed my move down here, it has been great for my career I think.''

The Dragons last week announced a new three-year deal for captain Ben Hornby and have also secured Jamie Soward, Ben Creagh, Dean Young, Mark Gasnier, Matt Prior and Trent Merrin to long-term contracts. Jon Green and Michael Greenfield recently re-signed.
