Fullback Glen Fisiiahi's brilliance helped the Junior Warriors close to within one win of reaching the Toyota Cup grand final as they eliminated Manly 25-22 in their week one finals clash at WIN Jubilee Oval yesterday. The victory earned the second-ranked Junior Warriors a week off as they were catapulted straight to week three of the playoffs. It was Fisiiahi's two second half tries which ignited his side after it had fallen 6-16 behind after an indifferent first half performance. His searing pace was in full evidence as he struck in the 41st and 58th minutes while captain Ben Henry and winger Bill Tupou also scored to take the Junior Warriors out to a 24-16 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Shaun Johnson added a field goal before Manly crossed in the dying stages of the contest to close the margin to a flattering three points. With standoff Carlos Tuimavave having a critical hand in Fisiiahi's tries and giant bench forward Sam Lousi providing the assists for the tries scored by Henry and Tupou, the Vodafone Junior Warriors were far more composed in the second half against a Manly side which was vastly improved from the one trounced 56-18 in the most recent clash between the two sides in round 24 of the regular season. Hooker Elijah Taylor and interchange dummy half Nafe Seluini today made their 50th NYC appearances while Tupou played in his 49th NYC match. In other week one NYC finals South Sydney edged Gold Coast 24-22, North Queensland hammered the Sydney Roosters 46-12 and Canterbury-Bankstown overwhelmed Canberra 54-18. Gold Coast and Manly were both eliminated while South Sydney joins the Junior Warriors in advancing to week three. In next weekend's semi-finals North Queensland faces Canberra at Canberra Stadium on Friday and Canterbury-Bankstown takes on the Roosters at Sydney Football Stadium on Saturday. Junior Warriors 25 (Glen Fisiiahi 2, Charlie Gubb, Ben Henry, Bill Tupou tries; Shaun Johnson 2 conversions, field goal). Manly Sea Eagles 22 (Liam Higgins 2, Scott Blanch, Lama Tasi tries; Scott Blanch 3 conversions). Halftime: 16-6 Sea Eagles. Referee: Gavin Morris. tvnz.co.nz |
