Source: menmedia.co.uk Old Trafford is up against Wembley for the right to stage the Rugby League World Cup Final, M.E.N. Sport can reveal. In a move that could be worth more than £4.1m, officials want to host the match at the Theatre of Dreams. They are one of a number of contenders to stage the conclusion of the 14-nation tournament, which heads to England, Wales, France and Ireland, in 2013. RFL bosses remain tight-lipped and will not reveal which venues have submitted bids ahead of next month’s decision. But we understand the main opposition comes from the capital – with bosses at the national stadium keen to secure the event after they hosted November’s England v Australia Four Nations clash. United’s 76,000-capacity home has become synonymous with the sport’s big occasions after hosting Super League’s Grand Final since its inception in 1998. And with London set to benefit from next year’s Olympics, Lord Peter Smith, the Wigan council leader behind the region’s combined involvement, believes Old Trafford should get the nod. He said: “It’s in rugby league heartland and it’s a really excellent venue. It is the right choice and could be worth £4.1m. London has the Olympics, so do they need this on top of all that?” RFL chiefs may want to choose the capital as part of their ongoing commitment to elevate the game beyond the traditionally strong M62 corridor. But Lord Smith believes that enough is being done already to spread the gospel. He said: “The final will be seen by millions on TV and there are tournament matches being played in places like Limerick and Bristol, so efforts are being made to spread the game. “Every time there is a match at Old Trafford it’s full and it would be great to see a packed house watch England beat the Aussies in the final.” Next month’s announcement will also see venues named for both semi-finals and the opening ceremony. |

I'm a fan of using Wembley. It is the national stadium of England in it's capital, it is the most known stadium in the world and is a great venue for Rugby League. The only down side would be if England failed to make the final. |

I wouldn't be surprised if the world cup final had the same two teams in it as the recently completed fournations comp. For some reason, new zealand just doesn't seem to perform well over in the UK, as we seen during the last comp there. I don't know, i'd like to think that we will do well there, but even this far out i sort of lack the confidence in the kiwis. If it turned out to be an ENG - AUS final, then it would probably be a packed house, and would be a great spectacle for the game there. |
